Brentford Havant and Waterlooville: We "Havant" Got Another Cup Upset

Another FA Cup giant-killing was all set up today as Blue Square South (fifth tier of English football) side Havant and Waterlooville took on League Two side Brentford at home, live on national television (in the UK).

But it was not to be for the team who led at Anfield last season, as goals from Marvin Williams (no, not the basketball player), Charlie MacDonald, and Nathan Elder gave Brentford a deserved 3-1 away win.

Havant and Waterlooville do deserve some credit, however, as they played a great game, and could have well forced another FA Cup upset had it not been for the brilliant goalkeeping of Bees keeper Ben Hamer. After being 2-0 down, the home side responded through Ian Simpemba and almost got level had it not been for the double-save from Hamer.

It was a good win for Brentford, who, in the end, showed their professionalism over their amateur counterparts, as well as their much better fitness and technical ability.

Reaction

Speaking to ITV 1 directly after the game, Brentford goal scorer Charlie MacDonald said his team did exactly what they knew was needed.

"We knew what they (Havant and Waterlooville) were about after what they achieved in the cup last season," he said. "We had to be professional and thankfully we got the victory."

MacDonald also gave his verdict on Brentford's second round opponents, either Barrow or Eastbourne Borough, both of the Blue Square Premier (fourth tier of English football).

"The second round will be a tougher match," MacDonald. "You have to remember that for a lot of the non-league sides these rounds are cup finals in some respects. It'll be another tough game and we will aim to do another professional job."

Nathan Elder, who scored the third for Brentford to wrap up the win, was also pleased at avoiding a potential upset against the giant-killing kings.

"It's a massive relief to get through, [Ben] Hamer made some fantastic saves and thankfully the last goal secured it for us," Elder said. "The second-round draw looks alright on paper, but we all know about the FA Cup..."
