The NFL's All-Controversial Team
Controversies are all around us in the world that we live in.
They spice things up, and often grab our attention enough to wonder what is going to happen next.
In the NFL, there have been scores of controversial players over the years.
Whether it's been Lawrence Taylor, O.J. Simpson or more recently, Randy Moss, there's always been a group of guys who just can't seem to keep their names out of the headlines for the wrong reasons.
Here are the most controversial players in the NFL as of today.
Plaxico Burress
1 of 15Plaxico Burress is arguably the most controversial wide receiver in the NFL today.
After an embarrassing episode with a gun back in 2008, Burress has now served his time and is proven to show the rest of the world that he can handle himself with a new NFL team this season.
Don't forget that when he played for the Giants, he didn't along with coach Tom Coughlin, and is labeled by many as a "diva" wide receiver.
The Jets are just the newest team to take on this very controversial player in 2011.
Ben Roethlisberger
2 of 15Big Ben has been the face of controversy for the Pittsburgh Steelers for quite some time now.
It all started with his motorcycle accident back in 2006, and it only has gotten worse from there.
He was the main subject in two sexual assault cases both in 2009 and 2010, prompting NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend the two-time Super Bowl champion QB for the first four games of the '10 season.
Something tells me that we haven't seen the last of Roethlisberger's controversial side yet.
Adam Jones
3 of 15"Pacman" Jones is not only one of the most controversial, but also one of the biggest criminals in NFL history.
He has now been arrested a total of six times throughout his career, including his most recent run-in with the law last month.
He claimed the he was in incident, but it's at the point where practically no one believes him anymore.
He's been a decent player when he has seen game action, but just can't keep his head out of trouble.
James Harrison
4 of 15The veteran Pittsburgh linebacker has had quite the career in Steeltown.
In 2008, he was arrested for assault and he has also been fined several times by the NFL for his back-breaking hits that he has put on opposing offensive players.
Last month, Harrison even called out commissioner Roger Goodell and teammate Ben Roethlisberger among others in an interview with Men's Journal.
He is a ticking time bomb filled with controversy, just waiting to explode at any time.
Terrell Owens
5 of 15What more is there to say about Terrell Owens?
Whether it's when he cries, or when he spikes a football on mid-field for a touchdown celebration, he is a walking controversy.
Add to that the T.O. Show, which has aired on VH1, and it gets even worse for the former 49ers star.
The question now is, what will he do for an encore this season?
Chad Ochocinco
6 of 15What's more controversial than a player legally changing his last name to his current jersey number?
Chad Johnson did just that back in 2006, as he changed his name to Chad Ochocinco, giving him one of the most bizarre names in American sports history.
One of his funniest and most controversial acts was done during a '07 preseason game when he put on a cape that said "Future H.O.F 20??" after scoring a touchdown against the Ravens.
You just never know what this guy is going to do next, which makes him a great player for this list.
Cedric Benson
7 of 15Being intoxicated while operating a boat doesn't sound like a win-win situation for anyone.
This is exactly what happened to Bengals star Cedric Benson back in 2008 when he was out with a few friends in Dallas, Texas.
What's even more alarming is the fact that Benson has been arrested three times since then, including an assault charge from just two weeks ago.
By the time Benson retires, he will be known as the one of the most controversial NFL running backs of his time.
Albert Haynesworth
8 of 15Albert Haynesworth seems to get more controversial with every passing year he is in the league.
It all started when he stomped on Cowboys' center Andre Gurode's head during a game between Dallas and Tennessee back in 2006.
Every season since, he has shown up overweight and out of shape to camp, and has struggled to get along with many of his teammates over the years.
The Patriots and coach Bill Belichick will try to tame Haynesworth this season, but they might have bit off more than they can chew with this highly controversial defensive tackle.
Brandon Marshall
9 of 15Brandon Marshall is just another "diva" type receiver that exists in the NFL today.
While he was with the Denver Broncos, he often would skip practices and not put in the extra effort that he felt that he needed to week in and week out.
He also has been arrested three times in in the past, including driving under the influence and domestic violence among other things.
Recently, the Pro-Bowl wideout was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, which might explain his extremely controversial career in the NFL.
Hines Ward
10 of 15Hines Ward is yet another Steeler that has had a problem with staying out of the news over the past few seasons.
After winning Season 12 of Dancing with the Stars earlier this year, he promptly got slapped with a DUI last month.
Ward also got himself on this list because of how he plays the game: alot of trash-talking and a some crack-back blocks here and there.
If you don't know what I am referring to, just ask Keith Rivers how he felt after a crack-back block by Ward broke his jaw back in 2008.
Santonio Holmes
11 of 15The mercurial receiver would have had a much better career to this point, if it wasn't for his off-the-field issues.
He has been arrested a total of three times, and has had numerous other altercations with police.
His cocky attitude on the field has been very evident at times, and only makes him like worse as a player.
It doesn't help that he has a controversial head coach in Rex Ryan leading the way for this troubled star.
Vince Young
12 of 15Vince Young clearly has a problem with being a team player.
While in Tennessee, he never was on the same page with then-head coach Jeff Fisher, and it became very obvious over the last couple seasons.
Soon after the opening game of the '08 season, Young stirred up a big controversy by disappearing for several hours partly because of anger due to being booed by fans the previous day.
VY has a new team for 2011, and maybe his new teammate Michael Vick can show him that he can put his past behind him and still have some success as an NFL quarterback.
Ricky Williams
13 of 15Ricky Williams probably wouldn't have made this list if it wasn't for one word: drugs.
Even though he used to have a big problem with marijuana, he is probably one of the least controversial players on this list as of right now.
This is mainly due to the fact that he has kept his name out of the news for several years now.
However, this doesn't excuse the former Heisman trophy winner from being one of the most controversial NFL players of all-time.
Antonio Cromartie
14 of 15Cromartie joins a long list of AFC East players that made the cut for this list.
Back in 2009, he was fined 2,500 for complaining about the food at the San Diego Chargers' training camp.
He has also been known to have fathered at least nine different children with eight different wives.
When you also factor in that he is one of the biggest trash-talkers in the league, you have a highly controversial NFL player.
Michael Vick
15 of 15Michael Vick might be on of the most infamous players that has been in the league in the last five years.
In 2007, Vick was charged with organizing dog-fighting, and ended up spending 18 months behind bars for his actions.
It seems that he is on the right track as he has been a model citizen ever since leaving prison in 2009.
Let's hope that Vick can continue to keep his name out of the news for the wrong reasons in the future.
