The Best Jersey 11 Holders In Football
Samrin HasibNov 5, 2008
Ronaldinho used to wear “No 10” for Barcelona. When he went to Milan, he wanted the “lucky” shirt again but was unable to lay his hands on it. Not all great players wear the “No 10” shirt though. If you have noticed the number behind arguably one of the best strikers, Didier Drogba’s shirt, it says 11, not 10. “No 11” in itself is one of the best jerseys. A lot of great players at the moment wear them. Let me introduce you to ten of them.
- Arjen Robben (Netherlands) He plays for Real Madrid and provides an inspiration whenever he comes on as a sub. His career with the Dutch national side was hampered due to the appointment of Van Basten at the realm but he is still one of the best midfielders in the world.
- Joan Capdevila (Spain) With all those great Spanish internationals like Torres and Fabregas playing for the big clubs, this man hardly gets a special mention. Capdevila however really deserves one as he is not only a great player for Spain but also for Villareal. He has constantly been the first choice in Villareal’s defence and is quite under-rated as a defender.
- Samir Nasri (France) A bright outlook in the poor French side, this man has been a key player for Arsenal this season. He scored in his debut giving Arsenal the win against West Bromwich Albion and always enjoys having a shot or two at goal.
- Robinho (Brazil) When he came to Man City from Real, Bernd Schuster commented that Man City wasn’t big enough for him. Schuster wasn’t wrong because a man with his talent should be there at Chelsea leading the front line in Drogba’s absence instead of Anelka. He already has 6 goals for Man City this season.
- Miroslav Klose (Germany) A name needed on the big stage, Miroslav Klose led Germany’s frontline in the 2006 World Cup and played a key part in Germany’s run to the semis. He scored 5 goals in the 2002 World Cup as well as the 2006 World Cup and has a remarkable scoring record for Germany: 44 in 87 internationals. A key member of Werder Bremen as well as of Kaiserslautern in the past, he now plays for Bayern Munich and has 6 goals this season in all competitions.
- Carlos Tevez ( Argentina) He has received 2 red cards in Argentina’s last 3 games and is out of favour at Man United . Yet his talent cannot be denied. He can shoot at goal from anywhere on the field. He just needs a few adjustments to his temper especially to deal with coach Diego Maradona in the future.
- Didier Drogba (Chelsea) The Ivorian has been a constant thorn in the defences of EPL teams and is regarded as one of the best strikers in the world. Not may defenders enjoy having a go at him, especially Nemanja Vidic.( after being on the receiving end of a slap in the UCL final from Drogba)
- Maxi Rodriguez (Atletico de Madrid) He is captain marvelous for his club and an awesome midfielder for Argentina. He scored that all important goal against Mexico that won Argentina their round of 16 tie in the 2006 World Cup.
- Robin van Persie ( Arsenal) the 25 year old leads Arsenal’s front line and is a genius as far as scoring goals is concerned. His freekicks are excellent and he is slowly making his way to being a starter in the Dutch line up.
- Nicklas Bendtner ( Denmark) Germany’s two losses from 2006 to 08 came up against Denmark and the Czechs. This man scored the only goal in a match which saw them win 1-0 against Die Mannschaft. He is talented but needs a little more experience to become as good as his Arsenal teammate Van Persie.
Other No 11s include Gareth Barry of England, Mesut Ozil of Werder Bremen, Sergei Semak of Russia and Elano of Man City. The list of No 11s could go on forever. Indeed, No 11 is a special jersey and forever will be one; it might even go on to replace No 10 in the future.
