NBA Waiver Wire: Week 2

Dan BentonNov 4, 2008

Welcome to this post-Election Day edition of Waiver Wire...it's time to play "What have we learned?"

We've learned that James Posey may have won the Hornets the title. We've learned Rajon Rondo is a legitimate point guard now. We've learned that the Pistons are desperate; so much so that they'll trade the best PG in the Eastern Conference to try to score points.

We've also learned that the Nuggets are suddenly much better. And we've learned that LeBron, at some point, forgot how to shoot free throws; and we've learned that it's a long season.

But, week one is in the books, and early on there seems to be some nice additions to be made on the Waiver Wire. So, with that, let's take a look, shall we?

Roger Mason, PGSan Antonio Spurs

This was, well, unexpected.

Manu Ginobli is hurt (as per usual), so the Spurs need a third scoring option. It looks as if, for now anyway, that Mason just might be that guy.

Mason would be a conditional pick-up though; by that I mean, when Ginobli comes back, Mason has to go. For now, however, he's owned by just 16% of owners, so he should be available where you are.

This week, Mason averaged 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game; making 2.5 three-pointers.  He's shooting "wow" percentages of 71.4 percent field goal and 100 percent free throw, and his 3.5 to one assist—to—turnover ratio is about as good as it gets.

Right now, he's a terrific bench player.  You might as well snag him and get some use out of him while you can.

Josh Boone, PF/CNew Jersey Nets

Could this finally be the year Boone breaks out?

At UConn, Boone had "superstar" written all over him; but it's been a bit of a struggle in the pros. Throw in the fact that he's in a very crowded frontcourt for transitioning New Jersey and numbers will be tough to come by.

But, this week, he got minutes, and took advantage of that, getting numbers as well. He's owned (for now) by 23% of fantasy owners; so if you're going to grab him, you might need to make up your mind sooner rather than later.

Here's what Boone did this week, and I can certainly foresee this as an "average" week for Boone going forward. He scored 10.5 points to go along with 8.5 rebounds. Toss in his non-harmful one:one assist-to-turnover ratio and 0.5 steals, just for fun. 2.5 blocks per game is going to put him in the upper echelon with the Camby's of the world if he keeps that up. 52.9 percent FG isn't terrific for a low-post player, but I expect that to improve, and probably most importantly his 75 percent FT could be terrific if he could keep that up.

Boone's a player, and if you want to take a look, it should be sooner rather than later.
