Boxing Schedule: 10 Dream Fights We'd Love To See This Winter

Deion McNairJul 13, 2011

Boxing is such a brutal sport, but what people don't see in it is the essence.

The ability to have a punch miss your head  by inches, then throw a punch back at your opponent before he can even bring his arm back to his body is artwork.

A fighter could be losing the fight but then land one punch that ends the whole bout.

Every boxer is different in fighting style and heart. These two elements are what set up great fights. A fighter can be at a disadvantage stylistically, but his determination won't let him go away.

Some of the fighters mentioned in this slideshow will already have matches set up for later this year, but this is strictly a "what if" or "what should happen" sort of thing.

Here are 10 fights we'd all love to see before the year is over..

Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz

1 of 10

This rematch should happen simply because the first fight between these two was so sensational.

The fight featured three knockdowns, two by Victor Ortiz and the other by Andre Berto.

It was a brutal fight for both fighters, and Ortiz believes he has proved his toughness now ever since he quit against Marcos Maidana.

A rematch between these two would have no chance of disappointing viewers and would give Berto a chance to reclaim his title Ortiz ripped away.

Zab Judah vs. Juan Manuel Marquez

2 of 10

Juan Manuel Marquez is set to face Manny Pacquiao later this year, but these two have already fought twice. Pacquiao won both times, and later in this slideshow, I will explain why this fight shouldn’t happen.

On the flipside, a bout with Zab Judah would allow Marquez to be the first Mexican to win championships in four divisions. He says that is something that is important to him.

Judah is coming off of an impressive win over Kaizer Mabuza in March and is looking for a major fight now.

Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga

3 of 10

For the same reason as to why Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz should fight again, Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga should have a rematch.

The first fight was much too entertaining to let that be the end of things between these two. Mayorga did his best to get in Cotto’s head before the fight with all his trashtalking but Cotta chose to let it all out in the ring.

It was a very entertaining fight that almost went the distance until Cotto won by TKO in the 12th round. Who knows, maybe the second time around Mayorga could win.

Either way, these two need to fight again.

Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara

4 of 10

This past Saturday, Paul Williams fought Erislandy Lara in Atlantic City in a highly controversial decision win for Williams.

Williams threw almost double the punches that Lara did but landed less punches than Lara did. When Williams was awarded the win, the crowd erupted with boos.

Commentators Roy Jones Jr. and Max Kellerman were even suggesting that Williams’ corner stop the fight because he was bleeding so badly and getting hit so often with the same hard left hook from Lara.

Two of the judges had Williams ahead in the fight, and one had the fight score at an even tie. All three judges have already been suspended by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.

Akifumi Shimoda vs. Rico Ramos

5 of 10

Rico Ramos and Akifumi Shimoda squared off this past Saturday for Shimoda’s WBA title belt. It was a fight that started off looking like Shimoda couldn’t lose through the first five rounds.

Ramos was losing on all three judges' scorecards, losing in the punch stats and bleeding heavily from a cut above his right eye. He was essentially dead in the ring.

That is until a left hook came out of nowhere flooring Shimoda in the seventh round. Shimoda tried to get up but was unable to recover from the devastating punch.

Now days after, Shimoda still probably feels like he didn’t lose the fight, and that one punch was fluke. I would love a chance to see if this is true.

David Haye vs. Wladimir Klitschko

6 of 10

David Haye went into his fight with Wladimir Klitschko extremely confident. He taunted Wladimir and his brother Vitali endlessly before the fight.

He said the fight wouldn’t last all 12 rounds, and at a press conference, he wore a shirt depicting himself with both of the Klitschko brothers’ heads in his hands.

Too bad his noise making ended when the fight actually started.

From the opening bell, Haye was uninterested in engaging Wladimir, and Wladimir used his superior size to control the fight.

After the fight, Haye blamed the loss on a toe injury. With a “healthy” Haye the second time around, a rematch would make for a much more competitive fight.

David Haye vs. Vitali Klitschko

7 of 10

As seen in the last slide, Haye taunted BOTH Klitschko brothers during fight promotions before the bout with Wladimir.

With a similar fighting style and a blueprint to beating Haye in place, Vitali may enjoy the same success in the ring as his brother did.

Wouldn’t it be cool to see the Klitschko brothers both wearing shirts of themselves holding Haye’s head in their hands?

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Victor Ortiz

8 of 10

Instead of Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manual Marquez and Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz later this year, Marquez and Ortiz should face each other.

Since it would still be a great match, the fight would take place just before the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight so it could still have millions of viewers.

Marquez currently holds titles in three lightweight divisions, and Ortiz holds a title in the welterweight ranks.

Two up-and-coming fighters of this magnitude squaring off against each other and both having titles to lose would make for a great bout.

Jean Pascal vs. Bernard Hopkins

9 of 10

Jean Pascal and Bernard Hopkins faced each other for the first time in December in a highly competitive fight which ended in a draw.

In May, they had their rematch where the highly skilled Hopkins controlled most of the fight.

He was able to control the fight because it looked as if he was the only one of the two fighters to make an adjustment from the first fight. He was much more aggressive this time around.

Pascal seemed to have the same game plan but just wanted to execute it better. That is why he lost to the future Hall of Famer.

If these two met for a third time, Pascal would change his approach, and it would make for an even better fight than the two we have already seen.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao

10 of 10

Let’s be honest here. Though they both may turn out to be entertaining fights, nobody wants to see Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz or Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manual Marquez.

The megafight everyone, including non-boxing fans, want to see is Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.

Sure, if these two win their fights later on this year, then they will be all set to face each other, but the fans have waited long enough.

This fight will have the biggest purse in boxing history and may be the most anticipated fight in boxing history.

Even if for just one night, some say this fight will help bring boxing back to the mainstream. The sooner this fight happens, the better.
