Chris Cohan Needs To Make A Decision

Steven ResnickOct 31, 2008

Golden State Warriors owner Chris Cohan has a big decision to make. This is Chris Mullin's last year as a GM of the Warriors. Throughout the tenure of Mullin the Warriors franchise has gone from perennial losers to a solid team. This includes bringing in players such as Baron Davis, Corey Magette, Ronny Turiaf, Stephen Jackson, and Al Harrington.

He's also been rather hit or miss on drafts. With drafting players such as Mickael Pietrus, Andris Biedrins, Ike Diogu, and trading for the draft rights to Brandan Wright. Some players haven't made any significant contributions such as Derrick Zimmerman, Stephane Lasme, Chris Taft, Kosta Perovic, and Patrick O'Bryant. Still yet to be seen how good the picks are Marco Belinelli, Richard Hendrix, and Anthony Randolph.

Mullin also got Don Nelson to come out of retirement to coach the Warriors. Many Warriors fans remember their time together as Mullin was the player and Nelson was the coach. Nelson got Mullin out of the downward tailspin he was heading to become one of the best Warriors in franchise history.

So, brought in a year before Mullin was Team President Robert Rowell. Now the interesting thing about Rowell is that so far this year he and Mullin haven't been on the same page. Starting with the contract extension for Baron Davis who Rowell emphatically rejected and it was a 3 year 39 million dollar deal.

Rowell also wasn't on the same page with Mullin and Don Nelson on how to handle the punishment for Monta Ellis and his injury. I think the problem with the way the media portrays that Mullin didn't think that it was a huge deal. I'm prettyre sure that it was a huge deal in Mullin's mind.

The disagreement stems from what Rowell wanted to do after learning of the event. Rowell wanted to void the contract that Ellis just signed. Mullin probably was a little bit stunned at the notion of voiding the contract. Then things got ugly in the media saying that Mullin was too lax and felt like it wasn't a huge deal, etc..

Where as Rowell disagreed that it was a rather huge deal. He had to make sure that Ellis's injury wasn't going to hinder his development and that he will be able to play at a high level each night. Once it was found out how long he was going to be out he decided to suspend him for the 30 games including the preseason and fine him 3 million dollars.

I do agree with that Ellis needed to be punished. The issue is that Rowell put into the suspension that if Ellis doesn't come back and meet his expectations then he could be fined some more money as well. That's also an issue he should have just suspended Ellis fined him the money and left it at that.

With the start of the season and the Warriors being at 0-2. The supposed rumor of Al Harrington wanting out of Golden State. It hasn't been pretty especially since the Warriors should be 2-0 right now instead of 0-2. Rowell trade Al Harrington for a point guard so the late game situations go more smoothly and not everything is one on one.

The fact is that Baron Davis is a winner. Everywhere he's went. He took the Warriors franchise to the playoffs and willed the Warriors to a first round victory over the Mavericks. When he was with the Hornets he also lead or was part of winning teams for most of the time the only issue was he tended to get hurt, but even then he's been on 6 playoff teams combined.

So there's point number one on the decision that needs to be made. Is Robert Rowell going to stay or is Chris Mullin going to leave? The answer seems to me is that Rowell needs to be shown the door. Mullin has helped the Warriors franchise tremendously and it would be the second time the Warriors made the mistake of letting Chris Mullin go.

Secondly, the Warriors would be smart to promote Mullin to Team President. The reason why is the Warriors then can promote Mitch Richmond to GM. Then the Warriors can actually start making better decisions.

Many Warriors fans were upset about the trade of Jason Richardson for the draft rights to Brandan Wright. The issue was Rowell and Cohan deciding not to keep Richardson around because he had some injuries and missed a few games. Mullin I have no doubt wold have kept Richardson.

So he answer Chris Cohan is rather simple it's time to let the clown Robert Rowell go. He is not for the Warriors franchise and the way he is handling things it brings back the fear that the Warriors are going to regress to the struggling franchise they were before Mulllin became GM. The Warriors have the best fans and they're not going to stand for losing and Rowell is clearly the guy who has no clue or idea what he's doing except trying to make Chris Mullin look bad.
