Jeff Gordon Takes Pole at a Track Where He Has Never Won
The 2008 NASCAR season has been a good one for Jeff Gordon, but not a great one. Although Gordon was able to muscle his way into the championship chase, he has only been able to hover in the bottom portion of the 12 competitors for the championship this year.
Gordon has had some great finishes this season, but hasn't been able to turn them into wins; his winless streak continues on.
With three races to go in the race season, Gordon and the green Nicorette Dupont Chevrolet team headed off to Texas Motor Speedway. This track has been one of Gordon's nemeses, as he yet to record a win or a pole here.
But, Gordon looked pretty racy in practice, topping the speed charts. He got lucky with late qualifying draw, which him qualify as the track was cooling down in the sunset.
Many of the other top drivers, including teammate Jimmie Johnson, had gone before Gordon to qualify, securing positions near the front. But, Gordon was ready to give them all a run for their money. When it was time for him to take the track for his fast lap, Gordon ripped off a great one.
Gordon then had to hold his breath as his other teammate Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who had also been good in practice, took the track. Junior did well, securing the fifth starting spot, but was unable to challenge Jeff for the coveted P1 position.
After all the drivers qualified, including the "go or go homers," it was one driver standing in front of the Coors Pole banner, and that was Jeff Gordon. There was no one happier to triumphantly hoist the shotgun qualifying trophy with team owner Rick Hendrick standing proudly beside him.
At Texas Motor Speedway, where he has never won, Gordon will have the best spot on the track and on pit road to try to go after his first victory at the track and in the season. Take your best shot, Jeff!
