UFC 132 Results: 5 Reasons We Need Dominick Cruz V. Urijah Faber III
In a five-round chess match, Dominick Cruz retained the UFC Bantamweight Championship in a unanimous decision over Urijah Faber.
Immediately after the fight, much of the fan reaction was in favor of an immediate rematch between Cruz and Faber. An immediate rematch would mean a rubber match between the two fighters, as Faber defeated Cruz in March 2007.
Let's take a look at five reasons the UFC should schedule an immediate rematch between Cruz and Faber.
Few Bantamweight Contenders
1 of 5Outside of Urijah Faber, the UFC really doesn't have too many other options as far as top contenders go in the bantamweight division.
Joseph Benavidez and Brian Bowles appear to be the most talented contenders in the division behind Faber, but both fighters have already suffered definitive losses to Dominick Cruz.
Fighters like Demetrious Johnson are beginning to work their way up the 135-pound ladder, but "Mighty Mouse" probably needs another win or two before he can be considered truly deserving of a title shot.
Without a doubt, Faber is the biggest threat to Cruz's title.
Bantamweight Exposure
2 of 5At UFC 132, many casual fight fans were introduced to the bantamweight division for the first time. Considering the competitiveness and excitement involved in the main event, most were probably pleased with what they witnessed.
After Saturday night, there is no doubt that Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz are the most recognized bantamweights in the world.
As the UFC continues to build the popularity of its lighter weight divisions, there are no bantamweight title fights that make more sense from a business perspective than a third fight between Cruz and Faber.
Controversy
3 of 5After such a close fight, there was some backlash at the decision to name Dominick Cruz the winner.
While most non-biased individuals likely saw the fight in Cruz's favor, it was certainly less than a dominant victory for the champion.
Despite retaining his title, there is probably no one more than Cruz who would like a more definitive ending to the rivalry between Urijah Faber and himself.
Close and Entertaining Fight
4 of 5This second fight between Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz was exactly what a fight at the highest level of MMA should look like.
For 25 minutes, both fighters competed in a chess match that encompassed all aspects of the sport.
From start to finish, this fight had fans on the edge of their seats. There's no reason to think a rubber match would be any different.
Rubber Match
5 of 5Is there a person alive who doesn't enjoy a good rubber match?
When the fighter who lost the first fight in a series is able to dominate their opponent in a rematch, as was the case in Brock Lesnar's second fight with Frank Mir, it is understandable that an immediate rematch and third bout between the combatants would not be warranted.
However, that was far from the case in this second fight between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber. A third bout would bring some much-needed closure to the series between these two evenly matched rivals.
