Watch Clips of the Last Great Heavyweight Fight Featuring Lewis and Klitschko

First LastJun 29, 2011

Before Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO) and David Haye (25-1, 23 KO) square off on Saturday, it's worth taking a look back at a bout that many boxing fans consider to be the last great heavyweight fight. It also was between a British champion and a Klitschko.

The 2003 bout featured the last undisputed Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis and current WBC World Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko.

After a rematch of the 2002 bout between Lewis and Mike Tyson fell apart. Lewis was set to face IBO Heavyweight Champion Kirk Johnson, but he pulled out after an injury occurred while training. Vitali Klitschko, who is the older brother of Wladimir, stepped in to replace Johnson, and the fight was set for June 21.

Lewis entered the bout heavier than he had ever been before at 256 pounds, and the weight gain showed early on. Klitschko handled his slower opponent for the early portion of the fight and took some knockout shots himself.

Having never been down in his entire professional career, it's safe to say Klitschko's chin is among the best. It still is to this day.

In Round 3, Lewis opened a nasty gash on Klitschko's left eye with a punch, causing concern in the corner of the boxer from the Ukraine. "Dr. Ironfist" stepped up the pace in the following rounds, and both boxers were visibly tired halfway through the bout.

To Klitschko's dismay, the ringside doctor called a halt to the bout after Round 6, and Lewis was declared the winner by TKO.

It's hard to say who was more lucky from the fight being cut short, but the scorecards indicated Klitschko was leading by two points.

Lewis declined a rematch and announced his retirement in February of the following year. He retired with a record of 41-2-1 with 32 knockouts.

Klitschko fought three more times before retiring for four years before returning in 2008. He has gone 7-0 since his return to the ring and is scheduled to take on Tomasz Adamek in September.

When David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko step into the ring on July 2, it could turn out to be a similar kind of slugfest and one that the sport hasn't had in quite some time.

It may also have the conclusive ending that this fight never had.
