A BJ Penn Theory From a Suspicious Mind
OK, I confess, I am not a BJ Penn fan...not even close.
I was excited to see a comment from "Mom" on an article which I had mentioned BJ and was so excited! My mother turned 89 this year and has never been on a computer or read any of my articles (she is waiting for me to put them in book form, I guess).
The comment was not, however, from my mother, but from someone's Hawaiian mother and she took me to task for expressing my opinion on BJ whom she says is like a national hero there. (Gosh, I hope it wasn't BJ's mother, I like mothers).
At any rate, apparently Hawaiians have ignored BJ's striking a police officer in street clothes during a bar fight when he was "defending his brother" who also has a black belt.
He did get a year on probation for his indiscretion, which I think is odd after being told that fighters' hands are considered to be "deadly weapons" I have, in fact, favored police officers over my eldest son in his unwise skirmishes with the law during his late teens, so BJ would get no sympathy from this mother, Hawaiian or not.
So, back to the established fact that I am not Penn's fan.
I read an excessive amount of information on MMA and most of the material I retain in my memory banks is not very favorable to Penn.
In the beginning BJ was lauded for his exceptional talent in the martial arts and having a black belt. He also was the first American to win a prestigious international contest.
After being nicknamed "The Prodigy" by the powers that be he was really hyped up whenever he appeared in an MMA contest. Rogan and Goldberg, even with their enthusiasm, could not praise him enough for being such a natural and "double jointed" expert. Whoop dee do, though I was never impressed by his credentials and judged him as I would a student or a patient, by his behavior.
From his earliest fights I got the impression that he had a very short attention span and craved immediate gratification. He seemed to me to take his God given talent for granted and acted as if he had a degree of entitlement much greater than other fighters because of this talent. I was offended by his actions.
He appeared to run out of gas frequently in fights against Jenns Pulver, Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes. These were followed by disclosures that "he didn't like training hard or eating the proper diet. He traveled and hung with his
Of course he felt he was a "natural prodigy" and should not have to be bothered with the routines of other less notable fighters who had to train to be able to fight. Not what I would call a good attitude. More a sign of bad things to come.
So after his turn as a coach on the UFC TUF series with opposing coach and mortal enemy Jenns Pulver, BJ suddenly had an epiphany that to leave the legacy he desired, he would have to train religiously, eat properly, keep regular hours, quit partying, weed and cheeseburgers and fries to actually become a legend in his own time.
That attitude was better, and after admittedly choking out Pulver "longer than necessary," (which got Babalu Sobral immediately kicked out of the UFC, unlike Dana's star BJ), Penn kept up the winning routine he had established and kept winning.
Daddy Joe Stevenson and Sean Sherk both fell to Penn who had added licking his opponents' blood from his gloves post fight to add insult to injury. An unwise practice in the age of so many blood born pathogens, to say the least.
Along the way to the Sherk fight more and more interviewers remarked on BJ becoming fixated on fighting Georges St. Pierre and taking his belt. It was all BJ talked about.
He has told Dana he will only fight two fights a year and would prefer that these were at least seven months apart. He beat Sherk early this year and had asked to fight Georges before the Fitch fight. Although Dana didn't allow this, he and BJ were planning on having his fight on New year's eve for a supper event and a real blow out event.
BJ has promised Dana that he will go back to the Lightweight division and clean it out after his fight with Georges at 170 #, no matter who wins. He has even stated he could defend both divisions.
And now my suspicions have lead me to this conclusion: BJ is Lying!
It is my belief that he likes being lazy and eating junk food and hanging with friend in Hawaii where he has been dubbed by his countrymen as "the little emperor."
He wants the rematch with Georges because he has never believed that Georges beat him at UFC 58. He wants to avenge the loss, humiliate Georges and possess the belt that Georges cherished.
What I doubt that he will do after the match, is return to the grinding tedious routine that has reinvigorated his career or return to clear out the LW division.
Fighting has lost it's appeal, his short attention span demands new stimulation, and he will have a legacy to call his own if he wins the fight with GSP.
I would not have been as suspicious if BJ had requested a fight with Anderson Silva who is considered a better P4P fighter than GSP. He stated he wanted a legacy and to fight the best--so why not Anderson Silva?
Because he is a jealous mean-spirited man who wants what Georges has won through hard work and determination.
Now, can you guess who I am hoping will win UFC 94 on January 31, 2009.
Correct! And I will consider it a belated sixty-third birthday present, (Jan. 6, 2009).
