SEC Defenses Are Great, But…

matt starnesOct 29, 2008

The pound you in the mouth power conference has shown one inordinate problem.

The Southeastern Conference is struggling on offense.

It is no dispute that the SEC plays the best defense in the country, however, if you cannot move the ball…you are a sitting duck.

There are three teams that have a clear cut advantage in the SEC and they are the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Their consistency and high ranking in the BCS is one point, but they are in the national title chase for one reason—offensive production and veteran leadership at the quarterback position.

Florida, having the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Tim Tebow, has suddenly found their spark with a one-two punch out of the back field in lightning fast tailbacks Chris Rainey and Jeffrey Demps.

Finally, establishing the boisterous offensive explosion that Head Coach Urban Meyer had been attempting to implement, has put the Gators as a front runner in the SEC East, and perhaps a challenger in the BCS National Title game. But superman Tebow is the catalyst of the offensive and the one pulling the trigger.

3rd-and-15 seems like an arduous task for most quarterbacks in the country, but not Georgia’s Matthew Stafford. This guy can put the ball anywhere, anytime. Although they are riddled with multiple injuries on the offensive line, the Dawgs have a duel threat with running back Knowshon Moreno and the fastball of Stafford. Now that gunslinger from Texas is all grown up, no game is out of reach for the Dawgs.

Alabama is not flashy, but they are extremely efficient and effective on offense. With the sudden development of quarterback John Parker Wilson and running back Glen Coffee, the Crimson Tide have been able to control the clock and eek their way to an undefeated start in 2008. The underrated Wilson will not stun you with his talents, but he will manage the game and march consistently—just win.

These three quarterbacks combine for over 4,621 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. Not overwhelming numbers when you compare to the staggeringly productive Big 12 quarterbacks, but when lining up with the big boys in the SEC, it is a special year.

Say what you want about defenses, but there are very few teams in the SEC that can effectively move the ball on a consistent basis. Stafford, Tebow, and John Parker Wilson are the exception.

The Southeastern Conference Champion will most certainly derive from one of these three programs.
