Am I The Only One Who Thinks Tyson Griffin Served Sean Sherk?

Todd JacksonOct 29, 2008

I try not to write in the from my own perspective, and say I, or me, or we.  Today I just want to vent something though, and hope you all will indulge me.  It is time to get this off my chest.

I have been holding this off for a few days now and have decided to come forward with a strong opinion I have regarding the UFC event the took place this past weekend.

A lot of things happened, there were a few surprises.  Some pleasant, some dissapointing.

Who would have called Werdum getting put to bed in such a decisive manor?  I would have lost that bet had I made it.  I guess that title shot I felt he was in line for is a bit farther off.  I still say his role with Lesnar should have been reversed but hey, all I have is opinions and they get me nothing.  Well in this case they got me humbled I guess.

It was great fun watching Koscheck "putting his image out there".  I have to give the kid credit, I've disrespected him in the past, but to get in the cage with the likes of Alves on such short notice commands a bit of respect, and it is now given on my side of things.  It was still fun to watch.  I still wonder how he feels about turning around so quick and fighting again in a couple weeks.

The Silva-Cote fight has garnered a lot of attention.  There is quite a post fight analysis going on here and elsewhere.  It definitely was not what you or I expected but you have to hand it to Cote, he weathered a storm champions could not endure.

That storm was a bit calmer than the hurricanes we have seen before.  The cat took a decent amount of punishment and he ran it into the third, virgin territory for Silva, and eventually as we all know, fell to an injury.  The injury seemed to develop earlier in the fight, but who knows these things.  Overall it was a surprise in a few departments.

And here we go, in the words of Goldberg.  I love you guys so go easy on me.  The biggest surprise of the night, in my eyes, was seeing Sean Sherk with his hand raised after the first televised bout with Tyson Griffin.

I should start by saying this was an amazing fight, it did the cards expectations justice and I can only hope at some point these two meet again.  My concern is for the outcome.  The difference between what my eyes saw and what counted for the judges that evening.

Don't get me wrong, Sean had a great fight and did well in the first and second rounds with his take downs and his ability to take Griffins' back.

I have to say though.  He never really controlled Griffin.  Griffin, as always in the face of submission or adverse positioning, was quick to counter and shake Sherk off, consequentially getting back to his feet.  This is where I feel the fight was won by Griffin.

Sean was much more active, but with little to no accuracy.  I watched this with a room full of fight fans, and we were all saying the same thing through the whole fight.  WOW!  Griffin is really picking him apart while all of Seans' punches, while plenty, were falling on non essential, non threatening parts of the body IE:  the fore arm, the shoulder, the under arm.  Not the face, not the body.  Sure a few landed home, most did not.

Rarely did he put leather or knuckles on Griffins' head or face.  Griffin was able to hurt Sherk repeatedly.  He rocked him more than once in my humble opinion.  Not to mention stuffing take down after take down.

It was even mentioned at one point that Sherk just totally gave up on the take down.  Again, Sherk was so frustrated he gave up on the take down.  He is a take down specialist of sorts, he is known for it.  Does that sound like a guy who was winning a fight?

Consider how easy it was for Griffin to escape Sherk's ground attack, or get him off his back.  Sherk is world class and was made to look like he didn't know what he was doing.  Shouldn't the counter move hold as much weight as the move itself?

This guy was a champ and is a stellar wrestler.  He was frustrated so much by Griffins' defense, he went to a stand up game where he was totally dominated from where I was sitting.

I'm sure there are those who will disagree and I understand.  I just didn't see anyone point this out, so I wanted to stir up a new conversation.  It has been weighing on my mind since that night.  It pretty much distracted me all night.  My buddies kept telling me to let go even thought they fully agreed.  I am obsessive at times though, and hopefully venting this will bring inner peace.  Maybe now I can travel to my ice cave and find serenity.

I may be wrong about this fight, though I am pretty sure I am not.  The entire arena up in Chi-Town agrees with me according to the noises filling the auditorium that night after they claimed Sherk the winner.  They sounded a lot like BOOOOOOOOOO.  Maybe they were all Yankee or BoSox fans, calling the Moose or Youk calls.  Probably not so much.  There has to be some truth to my argument.

It simply was one of those cases where I knew who won the fight with no question, until they said Sean Sherk after the cards were read.  Sometimes the decision can catch me off gaurd, and I don't watch with the same technical discipline a judge has to.  I understand the game and what I saw was a victory for Tyson Griffin.  I was flabbergasted to say the least, right or wrong.

I've seen fights before, and I have decent judgement for the most part.  Other than a few take downs, and getting flipped off Griffins back like a turtle shell in Super Mario Bros. how did Sherk win that fight?  A little help over here?

Be gentle.  Im fragile.
