Does The Premier League Need Socialism ?

Abhinav SapruOct 28, 2008

The English Premier League generated an income of £1.8 billion in the 2007-08 season. This is much higher than the amount generated by clubs in Spain and Italy.

But a huge chunk of the Premier League's total income was generated by the 'Big 4', which highlights the gap between them and the other English clubs in revenue generation and hence the quality gap.

To make the Premier League more competitive, various measures need to be adopted to ensure more equitable distribution of income.

Some proposals that should be considered:

  1. 15% of revenue generated by the home team from ticket collections should be given to the away team.
  2. When the total value of a club's transfers exceed a certain value say $40m they should pay a 'transfer tax' of 2-5% on the amount spent above this value. Revenue generated from this transfer tax should be provided in the form of low interest loans to poorer clubs to sign players, improve their stadium, invest in their academy, etc.
  3. There is a huge disparity between the income generated by the clubs participating in the Champions League and the UEFA Cup. Around 5% of the total income of the clubs playing in the Champions League should be given to the clubs playing in the UEFA Cup. The distribution should depend on how the clubs fared.

These measures will certainly have a big impact on the 'Big 4' and Manchester City, who will provide most of this extra revenue to other clubs. The impact will be uneven. It will effect Arsenal, Manchester United, and Liverpool more than Chelsea and Manchester City as Abramovich and ADUG are not going to let a few million dollars stop them from signing the players they want.

If such measures are enacted they will have an adverse effect on the ability of promoted clubs to remain in the Premier League.

Nobody can deny that the Premier League is exciting, but don't you think that measures need to be taken to increase the competitiveness of the Premier League? If yes, what sort of measures should be taken?
