Week Nine Fantasy Football Running Back Rankings

Michael WhooleyOct 28, 2008

“Drum roll please.” Welcome to Week Nine of the fantasy football season. This is the official mark for being halfway through the NFL regular season, which means one thing: We are more than halfway through the regular season for Fantasy Football.

How time flies! There is a handful of excellent backs that have the week off this week, led by LaDanian Tomlinson and Frank Gore. There is also a few other RBs that we may be getting back this week, led by Joseph Addai, Steven Jackson, and Willie Parker.

With that being said, let’s hope for an outstanding Week Nine for yourself, as well as the rest of Bruno Boys Nation. To make that happen, read through the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week Nine Running Back Rankings.

1. Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) vs. Houston

Adrian Peterson has had a handful of very good weeks mixed in with a few bad weeks this year. He faces a Houston Texans rush defense that has allowed 119.6 YPG and 11 total TDs. The writing is on the wall for him to excel this week, which is why you should be somewhat aware that he has a tendency for falling flat on weeks that should be a cakewalk for him. Either way, solid points should come your way and we feel he bucks the trends this week.
Point Projection: 21 points

2. Brian Westbrook (Philadelphia Eagles) @ Seattle

The Seattle Seahawks have allowed 121.7 YPG and six TDs on the season and now they are banged up at the line backer position. Brian Westbrook should add to his already impressive season of eight total TDs and flirt with 20 fantasy points for the second straight week.
Point Projection: 20 points

3. Michael Turner (Atlanta Falcons) @ Oakland

When facing inferior rush defenses such as the Raiders, Michael Turner has put up 35, 28 and 18 fantasy points in standard scoring leagues. Look for another solid week from this on again, off again back.
Point Projection: 18 points

4. Chris Johnson (Tennessee Titans) vs. Green Bay

With over 600 total yards and four TDs, Chris Johnson is enjoying one of the better rookie years for any running back. Going against a Green Bay Packers rush defense that has allowed 141.9 YPG and seven TDs should help continue his fine campaign. What we like about him is his ability to break the big play anytime he gets his hands on the football.
Point Projection: 18 points

5. Matt Forte (Chicago Bears) vs. Detroit

In the first meeting of the year, Matt Forte put up 19 fantasy football points on the Detroit Lions. Look for a repeat performance for Forte, as the surprisingly solid Bears' offense should have no trouble handing it to the winless Lions.
Point Projection: 17 points

6. Earnest Graham (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) @ Kansas City

Ok, this is no joke here, the Kansas City Chiefs make the Detroit Lions look like a tough defense to run on. Earnest Graham should have no problem bouncing back and posting his biggest fantasy outing of the 2008 season. After all, the Chiefs' rush defense allows 197 yards per game and has surrendered 14 rushing touchdowns in just seven games.
Point Projection: 17 points

7. Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams) vs. Arizona ***QUESTIONABLE***

Bottom line, if Steven Jackson plays, he will produce. The problem is, he is banged up once again and was unable to play through the pain in Week Eight. The Arizona Cardinals' rush defense has been solid this year, allowing 96.4 YPG and five total TDs, but a player of Jackson's talent should have no problem posting 100 total yards and a touchdown. Now let's hope he is healthy enough to give it a go..
Point Projection: 16 points

8. Willis McGahee (Baltimore Ravens) @ Cleveland

Willis McGahee has back-to-back TD games, but make note, he lost some rushing yardage to his teammates this past week. His carries are still there, so don’t be surprised if he has another stellar week against the Cleveland Browns, who are giving up 141.6 YPG and 8 total TD’s.
Point Projection: 16 points

9. Clinton Portis (Washington Redskins) vs. Pittsburgh

You may be asking yourself why Clinton Portis, a RB that has over 1,000 combined yards and seven TDs on the year, is rated so low? He is facing a Pittsburgh Steelers rush defense that has allowed only 71.6 rushing yards and three total TDs. He will still get his points, just not at the recent stellar clip that he has been. Obviously, if you own him start him, but limit your expectations.
Point Projection: 15 points

10. Marion Barber (Dallas Cowboys) @ NY Giants

Don’t read much into Marion Barber not getting a TD last week, even with a struggling pass offense of the Dallas Cowboys, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not allowed a rushing TD all year. The New York Giants are another tough matchup, but you can expect an increased workload for Barber, who has been shutdown by the Giants in his career.
Point Projection: 15 points

11. Brandon Jacobs (New York Giants) vs. Dallas

Brandon Jacobs is a very tough runner to tackle, and with Eli Manning surging against the Cowboys over the last three games, you can expect the Dallas linebackers to cheat some to help out their secondary. Despite being shutdown in his last meeting against Dallas, Jacobs is in line for a solid game.
Point Projection: 15 points

12. Marshawn Lynch (Buffalo Bills) vs. NY Jets

Marshawn Lynch faces a tough defense in the New York Jets that have allowed only 82.6 YPG this season. Luckily for Lynch owners, the Jets have allowed seven TDs and Lynch has scored six times. This should be another solid week for Lynch, even if he doesn't improve on his measly 3.7 YPC average.
Point Projection: 15 points

13. Joseph Addai (Indianapolis) vs. New England ***QUESTIONABLE***

The New England Patriots aren't what they used to be, and the Colts should be able to pound the football against them this week. When healthy, Joseph Addai is one of the best in the game, and he should be in your fantasy lineup. If he plays this week, you can expect around 80 total yards and a short-yardage touchdown, making him a solid RB2.
Point Projection: 14 points

14. Ronnie Brown (Miami Dolphins) @ Denver

The Denver Broncos' rush defense is very weak, having given up 154.6 YPG and nine TDs on the year, so Ronnie Brown should be able to get back on track. However, Brown has just 120 rushing yards over the past three games, so if he produces another stinker, you might want to consider using other options on a week-to-week basis.
Point Projection: 13 points

15. Maurice Jones-Drew (Jacksonville Jaguars) @ Cincinnati

Maurice Jones-Drew has struggled quite a bit this year, but the Cincinnati Bengals should be the elixir to get his season back on track. The Bengals have allowed 146.9 YPG and 11 TDs in eight games, so if MJD struggles once again, it will be time to start worrying. Bottom line, this is his last chance to prove the BUST birdies wrong.
Point Projection: 13 points
