College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Recruits Who Will Choose the Wrong School

Edwin WeathersbyJun 22, 2011

I really don't enjoy doing lists like these, as I congratulate a recruit on any school they choose as only themselves and the school of their choice can truly tell if they're making the best decisions. Many factors play into the process from relationships, distance, playing time and more.

However, for this read I will give you five players, from a football specific standpoint, that I think will make the wrong decision.

Let's get started.

5. Chris Black, WR

1 of 5

Black is a dynamic WR that has a great skill set. He's a 6'0", 175-pounder with 4.4 speed who can flat out fly. He has excellent release quickness, hands, deep speed and RAC ability.

He seems down to Florida State and Alabama, and depending on who you ask, may be leaning to Alabama. I think if he goes there, he won't have as much success as if he were to wind up at FSU.

Why go play for a run first offense when you can go be the next Peter Warrick at FSU?

4. Ifeadi Odenigbo, OLB

2 of 5

Odenigbo is a future stud as a pass rusher. He's 6'4", 217 pounds, with an excellent first step, long arms to stay clean, bend-ability and a quickness to close and finish on the passer. He's also athletic to cover receiving threats underneath.

He belongs best as a 3-4 OLB/stand up rusher. Not as a 4-3 LB or DE. Notre Dame runs a 3-4 defense and he would be the best fit there. Yet it seems like he is not as high on the Irish as he is a few other teams, who interestingly are 4-3 teams.

3. Gunner Kiel, QB

3 of 5

Kiel is the top QB in the country and the 6'4", 200-pounder grades out well and above average in just about every major critical QB position factor.

He seems down to Alabama, Oklahoma and Michigan. But I think the best school for Kiel would be Notre Dame. Oklahoma loves Blake Bell, Alabama has AJ McCarron and Philip Sims, and Michigan has Devin Gardner.

His uncle Blair went there in the 1980s, he's from Indiana, the Irish run a similar offense to which he runs now and he could easily get playing time early on in South Bend.

2. Kwon Alexander, OLB

4 of 5

The premier LB prospect in the entire country, Alexander is a wanted man by just about everyone. From USC to Oregon to Florida and everyone else, Alexander's name rings bells on the trail.

He's a 6'2", 210-pound dynamic second level defender who plays with excellent play range, speed and athleticism. He can factor as a WILL or as a SAM, due to his instincts, pursuit quickness and cover ability.

He fits best as a 4-3 LB, rather than a 3-4 OLB to which he would be at Alabama. A native of the state, Alexander is being pursued big time by Nick Saban but he's a blitzer more than a pure pass rusher, so I don't see the fit in the 3-4 Crimson Tide defense.

1. Jameis Winston, QB

5 of 5

Winston is a 6'4", 200-pound QB who is viewed as the top dual threat signal caller in the country. Yet he is a pass-first QB that just happens to have great running ability and speed.

From Florida State to Stanford to LSU, Winston is being recruited heavily by all the majors. He's also a great baseball player.

But it seems Alabama has the allure of Winston. While this would be a fabulous choice, Winston would be forced to deal with AJ McCarron and Philip Sims on the depth chart.

Toss in the notion of Alabama being a power, downhill running first offense and Winston being a dual threat type, his skills may be handcuffed a bit in Tuscaloosa.
