Jon Jones: 5 Reasons Why He Will Become the Most Dominant Champ in UFC History
Jon Jones is one of those special fighters in MMA that looks better and better every time he fights.
At age 23, Jones is already UFC light heavyweight champion, and looks like he could hold the belt for years to come.
There have been many great champions in the UFC. But is Jones on his way to becoming the greatest?
Continue reading to find out why he could be.
Some Names Jones Will Have to Surpass
1 of 7Matt Hughes- 2 Time Welterweight Champion. Defended the title 7 times (5 consecutive), has the most wins in UFC history.
Anderson Silva- Current UFC Middleweight Champion, Undefeated in the UFC, Longest UFC Title Reign, 8 consecutive title defenses. Silva is considered the p4p best fighter today.
Tito Ortiz-Former Light heavyweight champion, most successful Light Heavyweight title defenses (5).
Georges St-Pierre- 2 Time and current UFC welterweight champion, Second most consecutive title defenses in UFC history (6).
Randy Couture- 5 time UFC Champion (most title reigns), Tied for most heavyweight title defenses (3), Oldest fighter to win a title at age 43.
Royce Gracie- Won 11 straight fights in the UFC. Won 3 of the first 4 UFC tournaments.
Number 5: His Ability to Be Better at What His Opponents Are Known for
2 of 7Although he has only been doing MMA since 2008, Jones has been able to make wrestlers, strikers, and submission artists alike look bad.
While Georges St-Pierre trains to exploit his opponent's weakness, Jones often looks better at what his opponents are suppose to have more skill in.
So far in his UFC career, Jones has out struck guys like Shogun Rua and Brandon Vera, as well as out wrestled Ryan Bader and Matt Hamill despite just being a junior college wrestling champion.
Number 4: He Is Unpredictable
3 of 7One of the reasons Anderson Silva has been so dominating is how unpredictable he is.
Like Silva, Jones is very unorthodox and can come up with a move out of nowhere.
Jones can hit you with from so many different angles standing up, or use his size to smother you and pull off a submission or pound you away.
Jones can go any direction in a fight which makes him extremely hard to prep for.
Number 3: He Trains Under One of the Best
4 of 7Jones is training under one of the best minds in MMA: Greg Jackson.
Although Jones looked good before teaming with Jackson, he now has an added mind to help him through his career.
Jackson being on his team means access to training with some of the best in the world, as well as having one of the best teachers around.
Number 2: He Is Still Very Young
5 of 7The fact that Jones is so young means he has not even reached his full potential yet.
That’s a scary though considering he has made every fighter he’s faced look bad.
If Jones is this good now, imagine how much better his can be five or 10 years from now.
Number 1: He Has Some of the Best Defense in the Game
6 of 7Jones is so good when he is on the offensive that we forget just how good his defense is.
He has avoided 67 percent of his opponent’s strikes, and a staggering 100 percent of their takedowns.
That’s better than Lyoto Machida, Anderson Silva, and better takedown defense than Gorges St-Pierre.
It is hard to beat a guy if you can't do anything against him.
Conclusion
7 of 7You can never truly predict just how great someone will become in MMA.
Anything can happen.
What we do know is Jones will make his first title defense at UFC 135 against former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
Will Jones continue his dominance and work his way up to being one of the greatest? Or will being in a tough division as well as making mistakes young fighters make get the best of him?
