Texas, Your Final Day at No. 1?
Will Texas encounter its first loss of the season against No. 6 ranked Texas Tech?
Texas is living up to a seemingly insurmountable table of opponents in its run for the national title. Often, teams must dodge a bullet or two from their respective conferences to maintain No. 1 status.
Texas has had the bulls-eye on its back for several weeks, several consecutive weeks. They have been tried, tested, and have stood strong. Few expected such results from an, at best, mediocre team a year ago.
Texas had the opportunity to knock off once No. 1 Oklahoma, and did so in decisive fashion. Following the win, Texas ran to the national contention position.
What's to follow? Only three more teams who are undefeated and ranked in the top 15 in the poles. Needless to say, they had a rough road ahead of them.
How does a team stay on top with so much pressure against such a strong schedule? Well, the recipe includes McCoy, McCoy, and more McCoy.
Coming off an unexpected dismal sophomore year, Colt has been incredible and takes his game to an even higher level when he's called on. The first game after Oklahoma, after they became No. 1 in the nation, was Mizzou; A solid team with a dynamite quarterback.
Was Texas for real or was the win against Oklahoma a fluke? How about 29/32 passing, 337 yards, and two touchdowns. Untouchable is Colt McCoy.
Despite having trouble against then ranked No. 6, Oklahoma State, he was still able to put up nearly 400 yards and two touchdowns. His only flaw was a single interception, something not often seen this season with Colt McCoy.
So the Longhorns had to rely on something more than just their star quarterback; Well that's what shows their potential. Defense is what ultimately won the game for Texas.
The final showdown of a road of strong opponents culminates Saturday night. After a convincing win over Kansas, Texas Tech proved that this game is a tale of two Goliaths.
Graham Harrel and Michael Crabtree may be the most explosive combination in college football. Few have given Tech much credit due to a weak schedule for much of the early season.
Win after win, TT jumped into the spotlight and now have the opportunity to take over the number 1 position. You ask, "Can they do it?" Yes, they can. The talent is there and the momentum is running.
Will they do it? Doubtful. The Longhorns have so many options and McCoy is now the premier quarterback we came to expect.
Saturday should be an incredible game. Watch for a high scoring game in which Texas defense sparks the offense into a two-three touchdown win over Texas Tech. Prediction: 45-28 victory and Texas grabs a spot in the national title game.
