Fantasy Football Week Nine Rankings: Quarterbacks

Michael WhooleyOct 27, 2008

Quarterbacks are so important to the game of football, and fantasy football, for that matter, that even when not playing, they can make headline news. The big news not involving a game last week came out of Cincinnati, as reports surfaced, stating that quarterback Carson Palmer needs Tommy John surgery on the elbow of his throwing arm.

Palmer has denied the reports and has gone on the record saying that he is continuing his rehab and hopes to play later this season. If Palmer does need Tommy John, the surgery will keep him sidelined for 10-12 months; thus, for the good of the Bengals, and fantasy owners, let's hope Palmer makes a decision shortly. After all, I don't think we could handle another season of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Other off-field news includes Daunte Culpepper. Supposedly, the free-agent quarterback was set to meet with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday; however, Culpepper has informed the team that he will not be meeting with them due to "a better opportunity."

Whether Culpepper is signed by an NFL team or not, he should not find himself on any fantasy rosters. Finally, the Dallas Cowboys are considering playing Brooks Bollinger over Brad Johnson, who has been a bit shaky in his two starts since Tony Romo went down. Even if they make the switch to Bollinger, the Cowboys won't be the same until Romo returns.

Yes, the quarterback position is no doubt an important one, but that's why we're here. It's our job to make sure, you don't miss anything when it comes to making your choice for who will lead your fantasy team into battle each and every week. With that said, let's move on to the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week Nine Quarterback Rankings.

--------------------

1. Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles) at Seattle

There might not be a bigger mismatch this week than Donovan McNabb against the Seattle defense. The Seahawks are 30th in pass defense, 27th in total yards allowed, and 25th in points allowed. McNabb will have a healthy Brian Westbrook to rely on and has continually improved his yards-per-attempt average from 5.6 in Week Three to 7.8 in the win over the San Francisco 49ers and 7.4 in the win over the Atlanta Falcons. McNabb will be money in this one.

Point Projection: 25 Points

--------------------

2. Kurt Warner (Arizona Cardinals) at St. Louis

Here we get to see Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner go against his old team, for whom he won a Super Bowl and two MVP awards. More so, we get to see Warner and the Cardinals offense, boosted by the return of Anquan Boldin, put some serious points on the board, as St. Louis ranks 26th in pass defense and 30th in points allowed. Warner could turn the ball over a few times in this game and it still won’t hurt his value.

Point Projection: 23 Points

--------------------

3. Jay Cutler (Denver Broncos) at Miami

The lack of a consistent run game, as well as a good second receiver, has hurt what has otherwise been a powerful Denver Broncos offense. After having multiple-touchdown games in each of the first three weeks, Cutler had just one multiple TD game in the last four before the team was on bye. Cutler’s fortune should shift this week, as the Broncos take on a Dolphin defense that has little semblance of a secondary.

Point Projection: 21 Points

--------------------

4. Matt Schaub (Houston Texans) at Minnesota

Houston quarterback Matt Schaub has come a long way since the first two weeks of the season when he threw five interceptions and just one touchdown. In the last two weeks, Schaub has throw five touchdowns with no interceptions and has upped his average yards-per-attempt to 7.7. Minnesota’s run defense will force Schaub to win this game through the air, and against the 20th-ranked pass defense, that won’t be a problem.

Point Projection: 21 Points

--------------------

5. David Garrard (Jacksonville Jaguars) at Cincinnati

Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard threw four interceptions in the team’s first three games. Since Week Three, Garrard has gone 140 attempts without throwing an interception. He can expect to continue that streak this week against the Bengals, who just might be the worst team in the league on both sides of the ball.

Point Projection: 20 Points

--------------------

6. Kyle Orton (Chicago Bears) vs. Detroit

As stated earlier, the Bengals may be the worst team on both sides of the ball. The word “may” was used because the Detroit Lions are still challenging Cincinnati for the crown.

Bears quarterback Kyle Orton continues to forget who he is and is putting up great numbers. In the last three games, Orton has five touchdowns and no interceptions and is really starting to take hold of the Chicago offense.

Point Projection: 19 Points

--------------------

7. Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) vs. New England

After watching the Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Peyton Manning play against the Titans last week, it’s clear that, while the offense is slowly making progress, there is still a way to go before it gets back to where it was.

The Colts get to host the Patriots this week and have typically played well at home against New England, so even if there’s a few turnovers mixed in there, it should still be a solid week for Manning against a Patriot secondary that is without safety Rodney Harrison.

Point Projection: 18 Points
