2011 NBA Draft: Did Kyle Singler Make a Mistake by Skipping Last Year's Draft?
Kyle Singler is one of the best Duke Blue Devils to ever dawn the blue and white, but, in my opinion, he made a huge mistake by staying for his senior season.
Was the reason for him staying to try and win another National Championship? That could have been the case, but as we saw, a repeat was not in the works.
Singler was projected by many to be a lottery pick in the 2010 NBA draft, and now, he will be lucky to go in the first round.
The decision to come out has always been a matter of timing, and Singler definitely might have missed his best opportunity, especially if the lockout happens and the collective bargaining agreement still isn't in place.
Also, his stats declining from the 2009-10 season to the 2010-11 season didn't help. His points per game dropped from 17.7 to 16.9, rebounds from 7.0 yo 6.8, assists from 2.4 to 1.6, assist to turnover ratio from 1.22 to .86, and three point percentage from 39 percent to 33 percent.
Although these are very minuscule changes, scouts do notice these drops.
Will falling from a potential lottery pick to a second round selection hurt Singler's overall ability to perform in the NBA? Absolutely not.
The biggest loss for Singler will be the amount of money he could have received.
Instead of receiving a rookie contract of around $1-5 million, Singler will be looking to make $500,000-700,000.
As for his potential at the next level, Singler could be a steal for some teams selecting him in the second round.
He can do a little bit of everything for you. He embodies everything you want out of your small forward and much more.
So maybe he won't be getting paid more because of where he ends up in the draft, but if anything goes wrong down the road at least he has his college degree by his side.
