Brock Lesnar vs. Wladimir Klitschko: What Would Happen If They Fought?
Fight fans we have all been curious to see how a top boxer would fare against a top MMA fighter.
We have seen some examples of this already, such as the very embarrassing UFC fight of MMA legend Randy Couture against former pound for pound boxer James Toney.
For those of us who needed further proof how a boxer would do in MMA with, of course, MMA rules, Toney vs Couture did not tell us much for Toney has already been past his prime for several years now but he has been highly criticized for his weight gain as well.
Those of you who did not watch this fight, Randy took Toney down in matter of just seconds and submitted him by twisting his love handles, causing the boxer to tap out faster than he could he swallow a super size double burger.
Our trusty deputy editor wanted to pose the more meaningful question what would happen if former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar got it on with current boxing heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko?
Anyone who follows both UFC and boxing knows how this fight would go down. It is quite simple actually.
If this Lesnar vs Klitschko took place in boxing with, of course, boxing rules and regulation, then Klitschko would knock out Lesnar with ease. The stand up game of Lesnar is not exactly his specialty; in fact, it is probably one of his weakest areas of combat.
I sat cageside at UFC 121: Lesnar vs Velasquez, which was probably one of the most sickest complete UFC cards ever by the way.
What I saw from my seat was Lesnar throwing and missing wildly to the head of Velasquez. It reminded me of the very sloppy street fights I would witness growing up in Chicago. Just as bad as Lesnar's striking skills were his defense was even worse.
Velasquez was throwing hayemakers nonstop and landing at will. All Lesnar did was close his eyes and stick his hands forward hoping to block some of the punishment.
If Wladimir Klitschko were to be in a boxing ring or even in the octagon, he would be throwing jabs followed by combos to the chin of Lesnar where he would inevitably get knocked out very fast.
Klitschko as well as his brother were also former kickboxing champions, so even if the fight were to take place in the UFC, I still see Klitschko knocking Lesnar out with punches, elbows and kicks.
Klitschko has the height advantage being 6'6" and he fights tall and towers over virtually all of his opponents.
His hall of fame trainer Emanuel Steward is one of the best in the sport of boxing and he often teaches taller fighters to use all of their advantages such as height, reach and even draining the strength out of your opponents by leaning and applying all of your weight onto them.
Klitschko also has one of the highest knock out ratio percentages in boxing and one of the most dominating jabs as well where he often sets up knock out punches right behind.
Both Lesnar and Wladimir are equal in reach at 81 inches; however, Lesnar outweighs him by a good 40 lbs.
So all of the advantages would favor Klitschko significantly except for ground game. If the fight were to go to the ground, then Lesnar would be able to dominate using his superior weight, experience as a legit NCAA champion wrestler, and of course his MMA ground game training and his superior MMA experience from his seven MMA fights.
If Lesnar would be able to take Klitschko down without eating too many big jabs and short hooks, and apply his much larger body frame onto Wladimir, he can possibly maneuver his way to submitting him via arm triangle choke as he did to Shane Carwin or even TKO Wladimir as he did to Randy Couture via hammer fists.
Obviously, currently Lesnar is not the UFC heavyweight champion anymore so he is no longer the much media hyped "baddest man on the planet;" in fact, with his injuries and possibly rumored reoccurring illness, it seems it would be best if Lesnar stayed out of the octagon and definitely a boxing ring.
If he did chose to return to fight it should be in the form of carefully choreographed "entertainment," where he would not be seriously injured.
Wladimir Klitschko is slated to fight the biggest fight of his life against David Haye on July 2 in his adopted country of Germany, where he is hugely popular. Should he defeat Haye the only fight people will want to see is him fighting his brother Vitali Klitschko the WBC heavyweight champion.
Will the Klitschko brothers ever fight? I think we have a better chance of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fighting first or at least Wladimir seriously fighting the UFC heavyweight champion.
