Sting Loses World Title: IMPACT Now Can Plan for Future
While this is going to sound odd, I will go on record as stating I am glad Sting lost the TNA World Championship at Slammiversary. While the “Icon” stood in the ring Thursday night and told Ken Anderson and Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff that he needed to win the match and retain the title for the good of the company, the idea of putting the belt on someone else means there is more angles for writers and the company to work with.
And above everything else, Ken Anderson is an ideal heel to take the title into the next challenge against Kurt Angle.
Sting knows about the history of WCW and Bischoff and Hogan. He knows that there is some truth in what he said when he accused Bischoff of being a “cancer” to the company and Hogan needed to jump ship while he could.
But Bischoff is now faced with another dilemma. Ken Anderson is only out for himself and the persona he portrays is much like you saw in WWE. And against Angle, which provides more excitement than the Icon, he will still assume the heel role, but the fans will still buy into the whole “asshole” story line.
And since the win for Anderson was “questionable”, does this mean he has allied himself with Bischoff much like The Rock did when he won gold and Mr. McMahon was there by his side?
The win also makes for interesting theater with the other possible contenders for the title. Does Matt Morgan get another push? The two were partners, then opponents and could be great adversaries for upcoming events and story lines. Does Crimson, fresh off a win over Samoa Joe, get the push he deserves?
What happens with others like Gunner, who could get a push since he beat Sting last week, or Kazarian, who could not beat Abyss for the X-Division championship?
Now, IMPACT has what it wants—choices. Choices to create new feuds, new plots and new face turns. While Mexican America works as the “anti-American” angle, Hernandez is much better as a singles competitor and a new look for him would work since he was battling Matt Morgan and then the feud fizzled.
Also, now that Mickie James defeated Angelina Love, does this mean ODB jumps back into the “company” and challenges James? What about Velvet Sky and her quest to prove she is in the middle of the Knockouts Division?
What can be done about the World Television Title and can we get some serious competition for it like Crimson, Samoa Joe or Daniels?
Last week, there were many questions about where the company was headed and there still are. What happens with Sting and his spot? What about RVD? Does Bully Ray and AJ Styles continue to feud? Since Bobby Roode could not wrestle, does he walk the line as a solo wrestler and allow James Storm and Alex Shelley?
Yes, there are questions. But these questions are a lot more entertaining than expected and the energy level for the company just got a little higher.
