Floyd Mayweather Jr. Confirms Via Twitter a September 17 Fight vs. Victor Ortiz
Former pound-for-pound undefeated welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. just tweeted to his fans that he is returning to action September 17 against Victor Ortiz, the WBC welterweight champion of the world.
Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO) hasn't fought since outclassing Shane Mosley on May 1 2010.
Boxingscene.com and Ring Magazine confirm what has been rumored for almost two months now.
Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO) gained huge momentum this year after upsetting former undefeated welterweight champion Andre Berto (27-1, 21 KO) this past April.
Both men were sent to the canvas in a fight of the year contender. Mayweather was at the fight with friend 50 Cent. Some say Mayweather was scouting his next opponent.
Mayweather's Twitter message to his fans reads as follows:
""My fans have been waiting long enough. Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz. Sept-17 2011 for the WBC World Championship."
"
The location of the fight is still unknown. The fight was rumored to be at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium, yet a fight in Vegas is highly possible as well.
Mayweather's rival Manny Pacquiao will be fighting in Las Vegas on November 12, 2011.
The announcement of this fight follows an interesting precedent.
Arum told the media a few months before Mayweather announced a fight with Mosley why he felt Mayweather wouldn't fight Mosley.
Now this fight announcement comes two days after Arum tells boxingscene.com why Mayweather wouldn't fight Ortiz.
The moral of the story appears to be that if Arum believes the fight won't happen, Mayweather will make it happen just to spite him.
