Old School vs. New School: Wrestling Matches We Would Love To See

David LevinJun 2, 2011

When they were in their prime, the Hulk Hogans and Ric Flairs of the business set the wrestling world on fire. Speed, skill, strength and bravado were paramount to a superstar’s character, ability to draw the fans off their seats and hold them in suspended animation.

While there are thousands of wrestlers good enough to grace the rosters of WWE, WCW and the AWA, today we are seeing old-school wrestlers join forces with the newer generation to create compelling if not spectacular storylines.

Wouldn’t it be great if wrestlers in the past could meet the wrestling generation of today? Here are some matches that would definitely spark some interest in the wrestling community.

Arn Anderson vs. Booby Roode

1 of 10

Anderson in his prime was one of the best mat wrestlers in the business and now as a road agent, works with younger stars to perfect their craft. He is still one of the toughest son of a guns to ever lace up a pair of boots.

Roode is the up-and-coming star for IMPACT and will likely get a singles run together soon. His interview skills are top-notch and his craft is getting better.

The idea of these too colliding is phenomenal.

Goldberg vs. Matt Morgan

2 of 10

Power against power. Goldberg would manhandle his opponents and win in record time. He could beat anyone if he put his mind to it.

Morgan should be running through opponents like the former world champion. The blueprint for wrestling has not been as impactful as he should be and a challenge like Goldberg would certainly set a fire under Morgan to show why he can be the best.

Bob Backlund vs. Kurt Angle

3 of 10

The way wrestling in the WWE was supposed to be and the way it is done now in IMPACT.

Although Angle is 43 years old, he is still one of the 10 best wrestlers in the business. He is as agile as he used to be and his amateur background goes without compare.

Backlund was a training freak and used great amateur skills to make his opponents submit.

This is the type of match that may go the time limit.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Chris Jericho

4 of 10

Could be a rivalry like Steamboat/Flair or Steamboat/Savage.

In the 1980s, this would be the match everyone would want to see. Both could go to the air to seal a victory or use mat skills to wear their opponent down. Steamboat learned from Flair how to chop and fight his way to a win.

Jericho uses his tenacity and his agility to beat opponents who are much larger than him.

An even match at its best.

The Road Warriors vs. Matt Morgan and Hernandez

5 of 10

Morgan and Hernandez were great as teammates and now are bitter rivals. Together, they form an old duo that could beat anyone.

The Road Warriors had no team on par with their awesome power in the 1980s.

Two teams who will beat the daylights out of each other.

Tully Blanchard vs. Mr. Anderson

6 of 10

I like this one because it truly is old-school wresting versus a brash and bold wrestler.

Blanchard was fearless in the ring and used the entire mat to beat his opponent. Anderson uses his power and the Mic Check to take his opponents out.

I'd love to see Blanchard use the slingshot suplex on Anderson and see what happens.

Dean Malenko vs. Jay Lethal

7 of 10

Man of a thousand holds against the man who helped take the X-Division to a new level. Malenko lets his wrestling talk for him while Lethal uses his high-flying skills to take down opponents.

Maybe the older Malenko will show the younger cat a thing or two.

A.J. Styles vs. Magnum T.A.

8 of 10

A matchup for the ages. We will never know how good Magnum T.A. could have been because his career was cut short.

A.J. Styles is the best wrestler to ever grace IMPACT. Both would be world champions in other promotions. Styles has already accomplished that, while Magnum T.A. should and would have.

Shawn Michaels vs. John Morrison

9 of 10

The best wrestler the WWE has ever had versus the best wrestler the WWE could eventually have. Michaels is on par with Flair as the best technical wrestler ever.

Morrison is agile, quick and possesses great aerial moves to go with a great ground game. This is a match that would pack the house in any arena.

The Miz vs. Ric Flair

10 of 10

The baddest man in the sport before he "retired" goes against the baddest man in the sport today.

The Miz is cocky, arrogant and has the skill and interview persona like a younger Flair.

Flair used everything in his power to win and if he could not win, he would get himself disqualified. The Miz has the same type of instinct.

Flair would prevail in the end because of experience.
