Manny Pacquiao: Who's Next After Juan Manuel Marquez?
Boxing fans who have responded to an online poll conducted by Boxing Scene as of May 31 have not given up on unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as Manny Pacquiao's next probable opponent after the Filipino boxer's third fight with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez scheduled for November 12.
Respondents to the online survey were requested to answer the question: After the Juan Manuel Marquez Trilogy, Who Should Manny Pacquiao Fight Next?
As of 11:00 a.m. ET, 3,240 respondents voted, with the result showing Floyd Mayweather, Jr. on top of the list as shown in the table below:
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. 56.0%
Sergio Martinez 16.5%
Victor Ortiz 15.5%
Timothy Bradley 7.0%
Saul Alvarez 3.8%
The result of the survey shows respondents still prefer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as Pacquiao's next opponent after getting past Marquez on November 12, despite the unbeaten champion's reluctance to commit himself to a fight in the early part of next year.
Early this year, a similar survey was conducted with this question: Do you think Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has finally decided to retire from boxing without facing Manny Pacquiao?
Out of around 1,200 respondents, 50% say they think Mayweather may have made a decision to retire without facing Pacquiao.
Despite the uncertainties that come in the way of what appears to be the richest and biggest fight next year, boxing fans from around the world are still hoping the fight will eventually happen.
As shown in the survey result, Martinez took the second spot with 16.5%, followed by Victor Ortiz with 15.5% and Timothy Bradley in a distant fourth with 7.0%.
Fans are divided on the proposed Pacquiao-Martinez match, with a good number saying the fight is a mismatch because of the overall size advantage of Martinez, who is campaigning in the middleweight class.
But without a more viable choice outside of Mayweather, fans have recently pushed for Martinez despite the the obvious mismatch. They believe the proposed Pacquiao vs. Martinez match is the best fight boxing has to offer at this time.
In the survey, it is worth noting Victor Ortiz is being pushed by a significant percentage of the total respondents.
Ortiz is fresh from his victory over Andre Berto and has become popular overnight for his courageous and impressive performance.
If Ortiz could show a good performance in his next fight this year, he could indeed be a good match for the pound-for-pound king next year.
Tim Bradley, who is still unbeaten in his young career, has not performed well in the survey with only 7.0% of the total number of respondents. Although he remains unbeaten in 28 fights, fans and critics say he does not deserve a shot at Pacquiao at this time, citing his poor performance against Devon Alexander in January.
Still, boxing fans are asking -- Who should Pacquiao fight next after getting past Marquez?
