UFC 130 Results: Does Rampage Jackson Stand a Chance Against Jon Jones?
Stacked with former champions and top contenders, the UFC's light-heavyweight division has been in a state of flux lately to determine the next challenger for Jon Jones' belt.
Last night, former champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson made his case, taking all three rounds against Matt Hamill.
"Rampage" put on a striking clinic, stuffing each one of Hamill's takedowns and punishing the young fighter each time he attempted to clinch. Hamill was unable to impose his will and was in danger of being knocked out the entire fight.
Although not the most exciting victory, Jackson showed the MMA world that he's still got it and is motivated to reclaim the title.
Jackson's hunger for a title shot is no longer a question. The question is does he even stand a chance against Jones?
Comparing his last two opponents with the current champion, Jones brings a far advanced level of wrestling and some analysts would say a better striking game as well. Jones has proven he can take down any opponent, which leads me to question Jackson's takedown defense against a world-class wrestler.
The only way I envision "Rampage" making it a fight is in the stand-up battle, specifically the clinch.
When Hamill stayed in the pocket or clinched up after a failed takedown, Jackson punished him each time. Throwing numerous hard body shots and catching the Ultimate Fighter alum with clean hooks. It's surprising Hamill could even weather the blows.
The worse thing Jackson could do is stay out of range with Jones.
His reach and funky angles would enable him to pick apart "Rampage," forcing the former champion to play his game. As we saw in the Lyoto Machida fight, Jackson was successful when he cut the distance and dirty boxed.
If Jackson does end up getting another title shot his game plan should be to quickly cover the distance and use his power to punish the young champion with body shots.
Any other tactic will lead to a long night for the former champion.
