Kyle Busch Speeding and 5 Athlete Offenses We Totally Saw Coming

Adam LazarusMay 25, 2011

Celebrities, like everyone, have the occasional brush with the law.

Of course, when Joe Schmo is arrested for DUI or shoplifting, just about no one cares; a movie star or a congressman, on the other hand, is a different story.

So we tend to stand up and notice those offenses, no matter how small or large, when they are made by celebrities.

Athletes are no exception.

Plenty of them are surprises—I don't think the general public could have expected Michael Vick's legal troubles or Tony LaRussa's DUI a few years back.

But plenty of them we should have seen coming. Here are a few.

No. 5: Kyle Busch

1 of 5
ORLANDO, FL - DECEMBER 10: Kyle Busch poses backstage with his trophy awarded for finishing second in the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series Top 10 at the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series Awards Ceremony at the Portofino Bay Hotel on December 10, 2004 in Orlando, Florida.

Offense: Speeding

When: May 2011

According to reports, the NASCAR star was caught driving 128 mph in a 45 mph zone.

"I was test-driving a new sports car and I got carried away," he admitted. "I went beyond the speed I should have been going on a public road. I apologize to the public, my fans, sponsors and race teams for my lack of judgment."

It was actually the second time (2006) that he was cited when he pulled out of a gas station and into a fast-food restaurant. Busch said at the time he "chirped" his tires, but didn't exceed 10 mph.

Give him credit, however. Look how much he improved his time in five years: by over 100 miles per hour!

No. 4: Tank Johnson

CHICAGO - DECEMBER 03: Tank Johnson #99 of the Chicago Bears fires up the crowd during a game against the Minnesota Vikings on December 3, 2006 at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. The Bears defeated the Vikings 23-13 to win the NFC North Division titl

Offense: (Multiple) Weapons chargers

When: 2005, 2006

When a guy's nickname is "Tank," shouldn't we expect him to have an affinity for guns?

Police raided his home in 2006 and found six unregistered firearms, including two assault riffles. This came roughly a year after he was on probation for illegally having a handgun in a nightclub.

As if those two tank-like run ins with the law weren't enough, the 6'3", 325-pound defensive tackle was pulled over in 2010 for doing 40 mph in a 20.

General Sherman, eat your heart out.

No. 3: Lenny Dykstra

Offense: Grand theft auto

When: April 2011

"Nails" has run into some serious legal troubles since leaving the game: sexual harassment and financial mistakes mostly.

But he took it to a whole new level this spring when he allegedly tried to buy a stolen car. He was arrested for grand theft auto, but prosecutors later declined to press chargers.

Why should we have expected this type of offense from the former World Series hero?

He swiped 285 bases during his big league career!

Offense: Reckless driving

When: February 2011

Losing the PGA Championship (or completely choking away the final round lead at the US Open) would probably drive anyone to drink.

Perhaps that's why Dustin Johnson, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, was arrested a few days after the AT&T at Pebble Beach. Taking 55th at a Tour stop he had won the previous two years might be another reason he drowned his sorrows in alcohol.

But that's not an excuse for getting behind the wheel of a car.

In exchange for dismissal of the DUI, Johnson was cited for reckless driving—something we've already seen a lot of from the PGA Tour's long-hitter. He's currently ranked 139th in accuracy off the tee.

Of course, when you're third in distance, that stat's not so bad.

No. 1: Corie Blount

5 of 5

Offense: Felony drug possession

When: 2008

....As in, rhymes with "blunt."

The former first-round pick out of the University of Cincinnati was arrested in Ohio after local authorities saw him pick up a package later revealed to contain over 11 pounds of marijuana. Two more packages, containing over 18 pounds of weed, were soon found at his home.

Do we really need to connect the dots for you here?
