Come To Think Of It...Brett Favre As "Benedict Brett"? Fahgetaboudit!

Bob WarjaOct 20, 2008

So much has been made about a supposed phone call from former Packers QB Brett Favre to the Detroit Lions that I was beginning to think the man had helped orchestrate 9-11.

Or he'd at least sold secret war documents to the Russians during the Cold War.

Come on, people, lighten up already. First of all, Favre is denying it happened. But even if he had called Lions coach Rod Marinelli and spent an hour on the phone with him explaining nuances of the Packer offense, so what?

For one thing, it certainly didn't help, as the Pack crushed the Lions 48-25.

For another thing, it is not unusual for players to spill secrets about their former team when they sign elsewhere. It is expected, in fact.

The difference being, usually the player only divulges that information to his current team. If Favre indeed went out of his way to call the Lions with that information, then he is guilty of poor judgement.

And for that, we should give him The Comfy Chair! That's right, he is to suffer the brutality that is The Comfy Chair for the horrendous act he committed.

Yeah, and for spying on other teams, the Patriots only got fined and lost a draft pick.  On something that was a far more serious offense, mind you.

In fact, even if Favre did what he is accused on doing, neither he nor the Lions broke any rules.

“We do not have a comment,” league spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Monday morning. “Even if it were true, there would be no violation of league rules.”

Hey, that's what I just said.  So, why the big deal?

Well, Brett Favre is news because he's famous. And his animosity toward the Green Bay Packers for the ugly way in which his desire to return to football was treated is well understood.

And it was a slow news day in the NFL, other than Pacman Jones entering rehab.

If he did it, I don't like it. Plain and simple. But I don't think it should be front page news.

Look, this is a league in which players who have been suspended for performance enhancing drugs still get elected to the Pro Bowl.  In the same year.

Because Brett Favre can't keep a secret, off with his head!

Actually, a few of his former teammates weren't too happy to hear about this revelation. Among them, Charles Woodson.

“He contacted them? I don’t respect that,” cornerback Charles Woodson said after the Packers’ victory over Indianapolis on Sunday. “If they call him and he gives them information, that’s one thing. But to seek a team out and to feel like you’re trying to sabotage this team, I don’t respect that. I know he’s been the greatest player around here for a long time, but there’s no honor in that.”

Listen, we have an economy going into the toilet, wars dragging on all over the globe, a presidential election coming up, and this is what the talking heads are wasting our time with?

Come to think of it, it would take a lot more than a phone call for the woeful Lions to win a game these days. Even one from a so-called "traitor."
