College Football 2011: 13 Teams Most Likely to Be Upset in Week One
Upsets happen.
Usually, the later in the year they occur, the more significance is attached to them.
This list places Week One's possible upsets in order by likelihood.
While some of these seem to be unreasonable, remember, college football has become a game of parity, and teams that should mop up the field with their opponent sometimes forget to bring the water.
From FCS foes taking down FBS opponents, to high-powered offenses duking it out for BCS supremacy, here is your list of the top 13 most likely upsets in Week One.
13. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
1 of 13
Georgia Tech is not exactly a top five football team, but any time a BCS squad loses to Western Carolina, it's an upset.
Paul Johnson is still trying to implement his flex-option offense successfully at GT, and the Yellow Jackets have a few playmakers on offense.
The Western Carolina Catamounts had an abominable year last season, so it will really be a match-up of two major underperformers.
In a comedy of errors such as this, anything is possible
Alright, the rest of these could actually happen.
(Sorry, Tech fans)
12. Clemson Tigers
2 of 13
Ah, Clemson.
A beautiful college town with wonderful people and a mediocre football team.
In 2011, they meet Troy in the opening game of the season.
Not good.
Troy has the horses to knock off Clemson, even in Death Valley.
11. Missouri Tigers
3 of 13
Missouri takes on Miami(OH) in their season opener.
The Redhawks return 20 starters to a team that won the MAC championship in 2010.
They have a new coach in Don Treadwell, and a quarterback/wide receiver duo in Zac Dysert and Armand Robinson to give defensive coordinators nightmares.
While some teams have "gimmes" scheduled for their opening game, Mizzou has their work cut out for them.
10. LSU Tigers
4 of 13
This one may not technically be an upset, since Oregon should be a top-five team anyway, but if the Tigers lose to the Ducks, it will certainly have that feel.
There is quite a bit of hype surrounding this LSU team, with good reason, but quarterback Jordan Jefferson was less than consistent in spring ball.
If LSU loses this one, it will be tough for them to make it back to the BCS.
9. Utah Utes
5 of 13
The Utes take on the Montana State Bobcats in their opener.
While they are an FCS team, Montana State is no pushover.
They finished ranked #11 in the FCS last season, and were tied in the Big Sky Conference with eventual FCS champs, Eastern Washington.
The Utes may be looking past this one to their inaugural season in the Pac-12, and if they do, they might get ambushed.
8. North Carolina Tar Heels
6 of 13
North Carolina is a dark horse to win the ACC, but their mercurial play leaves room for doubt.
Led by DE Quinton Coples, the Tar Heels open the season against James Madison.
Why are they on this list?
Because JMU has been there before.
Last season they knocked off Virginia Tech, who turned out to be the cream of the conference crop.
While, on paper, it looks as if the Heels should run all over JMU, that's how it looked last season against Va. Tech.
And we all know how that ended.
7. Washington Huskies
7 of 13
Kudos to the Huskies for having the cojones to take on the reigning FCS champ.
The Eastern Washington Eagles are no cupcake, and Washington lost starting quarterback, Jake Locker.
The fact of the matter is, the Eagles have a better than even chance of pulling this one out, if they can contain UW running back Chris Polk.
Polk scored nine times last season and averaged over five yards per carry.
With another year of maturity, he will be a challenge for any team, but EWU head coach Beau Baldwin is the guy to come up with a gameplan to stop him.
6. Tennessee Volunteers
8 of 13
Tennessee's struggles in the SEC in recent seasons have been well-documented.
Coach Derek Dooley and Co. face an interesting opponent in their season opener.
The Montana Grizzlies finished last season 7-4, and have some returning starters that bring experience to the squad.
Of course, it's a long shot, but it's one of the most likely considering all the ridiculous cupcake match-ups on the slate in week one.
5. Texas A&M Aggies
9 of 13
Head coach June Jones has the SMU Mustangs on the rise.
Led by versatile quarterback Kyle Padron, the Mustangs open the season for Texas A&M.
If the Aggies think this is going to be a pushover, they have another think comin'.
The Mustangs are trying to get back to football respectability, and Jones has the horses (no pun intended) to get it done.
As long as Mike Sherman is content to pound the rock with the Aggies' explosive running back duo, the Aggies should pull this one out, but it's not a gimme.
4. Florida Gators
10 of 13
The Gators are taking on the FAU Owls to start the party, and may have a tough time slowing the Owls running game.
RB Alfred Morris is poised to have a big year, and the Owls return all five starters along the offensive line.
FAU's experience there and at defensive end, coupled with John Brantley's woes, could make a miserable start to the 2011 campaign for the Gators.
3. TCU Horned Frogs
11 of 13
TCU capped off their huge season last year with a Rose Bowl victory.
Can they duplicate that success?
Game one might tell much of the story.
The Frogs are stacked at linebacker, and Tank Carder has to be one of th best football names, ever.
That being said, Gary Patterson has huge holes to fill on the D-Line and in the secondary, and the O-Line lost a significant amount of experience in the middle.
Robert Griffin III, Baylor's quarterback, is a great test for Patterson's '11 defense.
2. Miami Hurricanes
12 of 13
Really, there is very little expected of the Hurricanes in 2011 by reasonable fans.
So it might not come as a surprise if they lose in Week One on the road to Maryland.
Especially since the Terps are stacked across the offensive line, and have a quarterback that can throw the ball a mile.
Besides, everybody knows a terrapin trumps an ibis 95% of the time...
1. Boise State Broncos
13 of 13
Yeah, you knew they would be here.
The Broncos square off against Georgia in Week One.
While quarterback Kellen Moore and running back Doug Martin will help Boise keep it interesting, don't be shocked if Aaron Murray leads the Dawgs to a victory.
The last time these two teams met was the 2005 season opener, which was also the last time BSU faced an SEC team.
The final score was 48-13 Georgia.
