Frankie Edgar: The Answer to the Lightweight Division?

Jessy MorrisOct 20, 2008

Born James Frank Edgar on Oct. 16, Frank Edgar started wrestling at Toms River High School East. He wrestled twice in the New Jersey state championship while wrestling at Toms.

He later went to Clarion University of Pennsylvania where he continued wrestling and qualified for the Nationals the four years he was in Pennsylvania. Frankie Edgar is now part of the Gracie system under fellow UFC fighter Ricardo "Big Dog" Almeida.

Since becoming a professional fighter, Frankie Edgar has racked up a winning streak of 5-0 before even making it in the UFC. Since entering the UFC octagon, he has a record of 4-1, with his only loss coming to the hands of Gray Maynard by unanimous decision at Ultimate Fight Night 13: Florian vs. Lauzon.

Edgar still rapped up impressive victories, defeating Tyson Griffin in his UFC debut and since then dominating Spencer Fisher and in his last fight, Hermes Franca.

Frankie Edgar has been able to defeat his opponents thanks to his superior wrestling skills and his very good cardio and a decent ability to box. He has been a dominant lightweight and in my opinion he should be the fighter who battles Sean Sherk at UFC 90.

Why, you ask? Well, he has a victory over Tyson Griffin himself and recently defeated top former contender Hermes Franca. I think it would be a very interesting fight.

Edgar vs. Sherk. Both guys have awesome cardio and wrestling skills.

Another question that needs to be answered is how would Frankie do against current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn?

My answer is...who knows.

Frankie Edgar has improved his stand-up every time he has stepped inside the octagon and has superior cardio over BJ Penn. Edgar has great wrestling skills and BJ has great take down defense.

I think a stand-up fight with BJ is something Frankie Edgar has to avoid. He would need to take the fight to the ground, G&P from there, and use his durability and cardio for later rounds.

Unfortunately, it seems match-maker Joe Silva isn't interested in giving Edgar a title shot anytime soon. He's giving him fights, Frankie keeps winning, but I haven't heard of any No. 1 contender matches for "The Answer."

Instead, he is scheduled to fight "Handsome" Matt Wiman at the next UFC Fight Night—a match he should win without a doubt. After that, let's hope Frankie gets the recognition he deserves, gets big fights, and challenges the lightweight champion whoever that is.
