Building the Greatest UFC Pay-Per-View Ever: What Matchups Make the Cut?
What if their were no boundaries in UFC matchmaking?
For one night only, fans could look forward to an entire MMA event consisting of a full card of main-event worthy fights.
What fights would you want to see? Fedor Emelianenko versus Randy Couture? How about Brock Lesnar against Alistair Overeem?
It's time to step outside the world of reality and linger in dream land for a bit. If the UFC was to build the greatest pay-per-view ever, here are 13 matchups that should make the cut.
Urijah Faber vs. Miguel Torres
1 of 12
Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres are often credited as pioneers of the featherweight and bantamweight divisions.
During their reign as WEC champions, fans often talked about a potential superfight between the two, but outside of a few snapshot staredowns, the bout never crystallized.
This all could change with Faber's recent drop to bantamweight.
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin
2 of 12
With the first bout ending in controversy, the rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champions Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Forrest Griffin has been long-awaited.
Given the circumstances of the first bout, an immediate rematch should've been handed down, and this would be the UFC's chance to finally cash in.
The bout has lost a little steam due to losses incurred by both fighters and the passing of time, but a fight between two of MMA's most beloved stars would be a welcome addition to this super card.
Wanderlei Silva vs. Vitor Belfort
3 of 12
What's not to like about a matchup between legendary Brazilian sluggers Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort?
They first met in October of 1998 at UFC: Ultimate Brazil, where Belfort unloaded on Silva with combinations to earn the first-round TKO.
Since then, both fighters have achieved worldwide superstardom, and a rematch would generate plenty of excitement.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Lyoto Machida
4 of 12
A great addition to this dream card would be the rubber match between former UFC light heavyweight champions Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Lyoto Machida.
While Machida took the controversial unanimous decision in the first bout, Rua answered with a first-round KO in the immediate rematch at UFC 113.
A third bout is sure to be a technical chess match with back and forth action.
B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz
5 of 12
Many fans cry out for a superfight between Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz and UFC champion Georges St-Pierre, but stylistically, the more intriguing fight for Diaz lies in a welterweight showdown with MMA legend B.J. Penn.
Diaz has the affinity for pressing opponents with a high volume of punches, and Penn is easily one of the best boxers the sport has ever seen.
On the ground, both fighters have demonstrated world-class BJJ chops throughout their entire careers.
A bout against an upper-echelon opponent like Penn would go a long way in determining Diaz's placement in the welterweight division.
Dan Henderson vs. Randy Couture
6 of 12
Randy Couture may have finally decided to hang up his MMA gloves, but surely, a bout against Dan Henderson would tempt his competitive spirit for at least one more return.
Both of these guys are among the biggest legends of the sport, and it's a shame that their paths never crossed throughout their long tenures.
Most would chuckle at the concept of a professional MMA bout between 40-year-olds, but Father Time has no leash on the fighting spirits of Henderson and Couture.
Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos
7 of 12
It wouldn't be right to leave the ladies out.
There may be other matchups hardcore fans want to see, but when it comes to mainstream women's MMA, the biggest fight to be made is the rematch between Strikeforce women's middleweight champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and fan favorite Gina Carano.
Both fighters met once before in August of 2009 in the Strikeforce main event, where Cyborg picked up the first-round TKO stoppage.
Despite the early stoppage, there were some positives to take away from the bout for Carano. She was able to land with separation, and she ended up in a couple of advantageous positions during grappling transitions.
With that said, Carano would need a few fights before getting another crack at Cyborg. The proposed "Face of Women's MMA" hasn't fought since the crushing defeat.
Cain Velasquez vs. Alistair Overeem
8 of 12
For a while, critics have questioned whether or not Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is the world-beater that some claim him to be.
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez would be the ultimate test to that theory.
Similar to Lesnar, fans are enamored with Overeem's size and athleticism, but those similarities shouldn't overshadow some major differences.
Overeem is arguably the best striker in the heavyweight division, and his submission prowess is well-documented. It would be interesting to see how he stacks up against Velasquez, who the vast majority considers the top heavyweight in the world.
Jose Aldo vs. Dominick Cruz
9 of 12
While it wouldn't win a popularity contest, a bout between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz could easily take Fight of the Night honors in this proposed UFC super card.
The featherweight and bantamweight divisions are often credited for being the most exciting divisions in the sport.
With Aldo and Cruz at the helm of their respective ships, it's hard not to salivate at a potential pairing of the two.
Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans
10 of 12
The grudge match between UFC champion Jon Jones and former champion Rashad Evans was on deck in the light heavyweight division, but Jones was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a hand injury.
Fans love a good storyline, and the falling out between these former teammates has enough substance to carry it's own Hollywood adaptation to the silver screen.
If Evans gets past Phil Davis at UFC 133, he'll move on to challenge Jones for the title in a surefire MMA blockbuster.
Can we get some more popcorn please?
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar
11 of 12
From purely a monetary perspective, a heavyweight showdown between former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC champion Brock Lesnar could be record breaking.
Before Emelianenko signed with Strikeforce, the UFC made several offers to lure the Russian to the Octagon to make this fight a reality, but the deal fell flat after M-1 Global insisted on a co-promotion deal along with Emelianenko's services.
Even though both fighters are coming off losses, this is still an intriguing fight that could definitely do some monster pay-per-view numbers.
Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre
12 of 12
The perennial hype garnered towards a potential superfight between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has become a spectacle in itself.
It's rare in combat sports to actually see the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world compete against one another.
A bout between Silva and St-Pierre would pretty much be like MMA's own version of the Super Bowl.
Will it ever happen?
While some fans hold on to hope, the chances of this dream bout becoming a reality are getting slimmer by the day. Unless the bout is fought at a catchweight, St-Pierre doesn't seem too interested in jumping weight classes, and Silva is content with taking exciting bouts at light heavyweight, while still defending his title at middleweight.
