College Football Top Five: Who Might Be Going Down This Week?
Well, if you have seen some of the top five teams this year alone, upsets can happen this year, as they do every year. But right now, with some barely scraping by and some downright killing opponents, you never know when one will slip. I will tell you who I think will go down. I'll start in order of rank from number five.
No. 5 USC
They played Washington State, which any team could beat right now it seems, but 69 to 0 is pretty impressive to me, even though it wasn't against a quality opponent. I feel USC gets love for points they score, not wins over quality opponents, and that is why it's impossible for them to lose at this point, especially with who they are playing this week.
They are going to Arizona, but really Arizona is not their best at this point. Right now at least they look safe, but I am sure it will not be 69-0 this week. Arizona is a good bit better than Washington State to me.
No. 4 Oklahoma
Now this is interesting—Oklahoma is actually playing quality opponents down the stretch, unlike previously mentioned USC. They are not playing any of their top opponents this week. They are going to Kansas State, which is a road game, but they have shown they can beat teams on the road, just not good ones.
Kansas State is no Texas, so they can rest this week—but don't look ahead to next week, Oklahoma, or Kansas State may pull a fast one on you.
No. 3 Penn State
This is even better: Penn State is facing Ohio State this week, and it will be a nail-biter in my opinion, way closer than people think it will be. They not only can run, but they are getting pretty good at throwing the ball too. Penn State has a good run defense, which should help them contain Beanie Wells and the Ohio State run game.
It's pretty easy to say that Penn State is on upset alert, since they are playing the best team out of the opponents of the top five. I mean, Ohio State has only lost once, so they are still in the hunt, and Penn State better look out.
Just because you have a good defense doesn't mean you have a good offense. You do not have a top five offense, Penn State, but you do get easier and more chances to score with such a good defense.
But since Ohio State does have a good defense and offense, unlike you Penn State, you most likely will go down. No offense—or actually, "offense"—you need one.
No. 2 Alabama
Now Alabama has beaten better teams than any of the top five currently, which is to their advantage, but to their disadvantage too. They have a great running game, as well as a great defense, but it seems as if they are barely getting by the past few games.
They are playing Tennessee, which is not in its best year currently, so advantage Alabama Crimson Tide. Since it is the SEC and a rivalry game, it will be close at the end in my opinion. Look out Alabama, or you may go down—but it looks unlikely.
No. 1 Texas
Texas has shown they are No. 1 the past few weeks. They have played against good and bad teams and won in the same fashion, but they have played good teams the past few weeks and have been giving it all they had, so maybe they have run out of gas.
They are playing upset specialists Oklahoma State this week, and they had better look out for them, or they will go down fast. Although Colt McCoy looks to be the best player in the nation, he will not do well if the offensive line and receivers don't do their jobs.
The O-line needs to look out for OK State's defense. They are fast and athletic and will take advantage when possible, so McCoy better play smart.
The offense is not the only worry however. They need to keep the great defensive play going. I questioned their secondary against the Oklahoma Sooners, and they answered me last night against Missouri
Look out for Oklahoma State's great passing game, not the run so much, even though you don't need to leave the lanes open for the run obviously.
But this is my opinion—who do you think will go down?
