Why College Football Shouldn't Be Played on Thursdays

Pete TreperinasOct 19, 2008

Ah, college football. I don't think there is any sport with as much passion, pride, and competitiveness as college football. It's great because no one is playing for money. It's all about winning for your school.

Living in Seattle, I've seen a rich history at the University of Washington, and I gone to nearly every home game since I was about five. Saturday is a day for college football. It's a day where homework can get pushed to Sunday night, and every fiber in your body should be fixated on college football.

One of the most exciting aspects of college football is the upset. It used to be so rare that an unranked sub-.500 team, like Oregon State, could beat USC, and who would've thought Colorado could knock off West Virginia.  Don't forget about Pitt beating then-No. 10 South Florida.

All of these upsets have one thing in common—they all took place on Thursday nights.

For the past few years, ESPN has added Thursday Night College Football to their resumé. Sure, it's good to get a small dose of college football on a Thursday night, but it's at the expense of ranked teams all across the nation. Thursday Night College Football is cursed.

Don't think that this curse is a new thing this year either, because there were plenty of Thursday-night shockers last year as well.

The first big upset on a Thursday last season was on Sept. 20, when unranked Miami beat No. 20 Texas A&M. After that, Thursday Oct. 18 kept the curse rolling, as unranked Rutgers knocked off No. 2, South Florida.

Later on in the year, Oregon (No. 2) was well on its way to a national championship. That all went bye-bye on Thursday Nov. 15. Dennis Dixon got injured early on in the game, and unranked Arizona went on to beat the Ducks by 10.

Last Thursday, BYU was regarded as the Boise State of 2008. The Cougars went into Fort Worth, Texas, ranked ninth in the country, and faced TCU. This game wasn't even close. The curse of Thursday night struck again, as the Horned Frogs destroyed BYU 32-7.

So on Thursday, Oct. 30, when No. 14 South Florida heads to Cincinnati, keep the curse in mind. And when Texas A&M squares off with the Texas on Thursday, Nov. 27, don't count the Aggies out.

This curse is the real deal, and college football was never meant to be a Thursday night sport. It's meant to be a day where the students can party and the alumni can tailgate. College football is intended to be played on sunny Sept. Saturdays, 12:30 kickoffs, and maybe the occasional night game.

If this Thursday night nonsense is going to continue, it will no doubt become a tradition, and a poor one at that.

I think schools should know that history disagrees with Thursday Night College Football from a superstitious fan's point of view. Scheduling games on Thursday nights will diminish the "upset-factor" in college football, because it's getting so common that good teams get beat up on these nights.

I'd say that the majority of sports fans are superstitious in one way or another, and if you ask me, I think Thursday Night College Football should be banned.
