Can Kurt Angle Save EliteXC? Nah, I Don't Think So
After reading an article or two on B/R that were concerned with "marketing certain fighters," I decided to prowl the MMA articles on the Web to clear my mind and to my surprise, there was an article concerning "Marketing Kurt Angle to save the EliteXC!"
Small world, isn't it?
I had hoped to leave the marketing concept to people who can relate to that sort of thing, but my curiosity got the better of me once again, so I read on.
According to my fellow blogger (on MMA 411) if Kurt Angle joined the EXC and had a fight with, oh, say Tank Abbott (and the blogger did), if the event was "marketed" correctly, the EXC would make millions and stay solvent way into next year or 2010.
OK, I am an admitted sucker, so I read the rest of the article.
The reasoning was that Kurt Angle has been a national star as well as a WWE and now TNA champion and has been a champion many more times than Dana White's brainchild Brock Lesner.
Each of the shows with Brock on the card did 300,000 or more than the usual 600,000 buys, so with a fighter of Angle's stature, one million buys would not be out of the question. Now, I probably have the numbers wrong, but you get the point.
To hype this up, it would be necessary to run spots on the TNA and WWE shows to be sure to attract the "Angle-philes" and get them interested in seeing their hero in the MMA and kicking butts.
Assuming that Kurt Angle is that big an attraction, I suppose so far the premise is valid.
Next, however, the blogger states that of course with his history of injuries and seeing that Kurt has broken his neck "more than one time," he could possibly die in the ring.
Yes, I have always said that this could happen and mentioned that any organization who took him on would have to be insane. The blogger repeats my opinion and it should now be clear that the idea and marketing are really not feasible at all.
But, the blogger continues: If Kurt hired on, fought and beat Tank Abbott, then Kurt could go on and fight this guy whom he has had a long feud with in one of the other organizations, and WOW would that ever bring in the WWE/TNA fans!
And if Kurt lasted for one more fight, that would bring EXC to Dec. 2009, when Kurt would be 41 and finally realize he was too old to fight.
It may be my age disparity with this young man, or possibly my lack of interest in "professional wrestlers" becoming MMA stars, because I cannot work up any enthusiasm for his wild idea.
And perish the thought that Dana White get wind of this and snatch Mr. Angle away to prevent a resurgence of his rival organization. That would completely honk me off and ruin MMA for me altogether
Now, for heaven sakes! Don't mention "marketing" or Kurt Angle" when you are talking to Grandma Dee.
Enough is enough!
