NASCAR 5-Hour Energy 200 Nationwide Race: Drivers Get Monstrous Hits at Dover

Sandra MacWattersMay 14, 2011

"Miles the Monster" reached out and snatched the drivers contending for a win on the concrete mile at Dover International Speedway causing monstrous damage to several cars.

Four NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers were running hard for the win during the second green-white-checker attempt to finish the 5-Hour Energy 200 Nationwide race.

Carl Edwards started on the pole and was leading the race. Joey Logano was running at the top next to him followed by Clint Bowyer and Brad Keselowski.

Edwards and Logano had been battling for the lead. Logano's car broke loose and hit the wall with Bowyer having no place to go as the Joe Gibbs Racing driver came off the wall and flipped the Kevin Harvick Inc. car on it's side.

Bowyer's car stripped the sheet metal off the drivers side of Logano's car then slammed hard into the inside wall in a very scary scene that could have ended much worse.

All the drivers involved in the incident, including Brad Keselowski, were checked out in the infield care center and were not injured, but a crew member reportedly sustained an injury from flying sheet metal or debris.

Carl Edwards was apologetic over his radio thinking he had hit Logano and triggered the incident on the final lap.

According to NASCAR.com Edwards said, "Damn it, I didn't mean to hit him." Edwards added, Is everybody all right?"

Kyle Busch had a battered car, but managed to slide through the carnage to a second place finish. Two Nationwide regulars followed with Reed Sorenson third, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fourth and David Reutimann got a fifth place finish with his Toyota.

Busch hoped to tie Mark Martin's record of 49 wins in the second tier of NASCAR. He had asked Martin to join him in Victory Lane if he won.

The race was red-flagged because of weather for 28 minutes and 26 seconds after a late start because of rain.

Elliott Sadler took the points lead with Justin Allgaier getting his first DNF in 22 races.

Kyle Busch won the Lucas Oil 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck race on Friday night.
