UFC Champions, but for How Long: Guys Who Have What It Takes to Be Champ

Mike LeanzaOct 17, 2008

The word champion is described as a person who has defeated all opponents in a competition or series of competitions. That may not pertain exactly to MMA champions, but for one man it does.

Anderson Silva is the perfect definition of a champion—he's defeated everyone in his division and has even decided to fight in another for new competition.

Does that mean he is unbeatable, though? Absolutely not.

This is a list of UFC champions that sit atop the mountain, and the few remaining ascenders that may just dethrone the champ.

Randy Couture Opponents

Antonio Roderigo Noguera

This was an obvious choice. Nog is currently the interim champion, having defeated Tim Silvia for the meaningless title. Nog will have to defeat Frank Mir in order to get a chance to add meaning to his belt, and by all means he has what it takes. Whether the champ he faces is Randy Couture or Brock Lesnar, Nog has the skills to be the champ.

Brock Lesnar

At the time of this article, I have yet to release my picks for UFC 91, but I'll give you a sneak peak here. Brock will once again have gold around his waist. This fight will be a five-round battle, but it will show that the winner is a real force, whomever it may be. Brock is the biggest heavyweight in the game, and by far the strongest. Whether he has a long run as champ will depend upon his competition.

Frank Mir

This is the final player in a four-man competition to crown a true heavyweight champ. He is definitely an underdog going against Nog, but, if he can pull it off, he may be champ once again. He has already been champ before and has proven he can beat Lesnar. I'm not guaranteeing he can do it again, but I'm not saying he can't, either. But before we get to see that, he has to beat Nog.

The Dark Horse

Fabricio Werdum

Those hardcore MMA fans are probably looking at this ready to flame the comments section calling me all sorts of rude names, but let me explain. Werdum has all the makings of a champion, and if not for the arrival of Lesnar and the comeback of Couture, Werdum may be our champion right now. This guy is the most overlooked fighter in the UFC, more so than Machida.
