Breaking News: Boston Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers Signs 5-Year Extension
According to a report from ESPN, Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has signed a five-year contract extension with the team.
Terms of the contract have not been disclosed, but according to Celtics Hub, an ESPN affiliate, head coach Doc Rivers is expected make approximately $7 million a year, $35 million over the five seasons.
There had been rumors that Rivers' coaching tenure with the Celtics would be done after this season, but the signing today puts an end to these rumors. Rivers reportedly wanted to spend more time with his family and take a break from his head coaching duties in the league.
As a coach with the Boston Celtics, Rivers has won a championship, has been to two NBA Finals and has had four consecutive winning seasons. The Celtics were recently eliminated by the Miami Heat in the second round of the 2011 NBA playoffs, as the Heat were spear-headed by tough play from Dwyane Wade and LeBron James throughout the series.
Rivers is 451-380 as a coach in the league in the regular season and 46-40 in the playoffs. With the Boston Celtics, Rivers is 43-30 in his last four playoff appearances.
Paul Pierce will be with the Celtics through the 2013-2014 season, while Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen enter the last season of their contracts. There is still questions as to what the Celtics front office will decide to do with the contracts of the aging Allen and Garnett.
With the return of the Big Three next season, Rajon Rondo still under contract and Rivers signing the extension, the Boston Celtics organization and fans can now breathe a sigh of relief.
