5 Blockbuster Rematches and Trilogies Fans Would Love to Watch (with Video)
In the recent past, boxing fans have voiced their frustrations with a number of low quality fights being forced into their deep pockets by giant boxing promoters led by Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions and Oscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions.
These two industry leaders have a wide array of quality boxers on their rolls, but most power matches have not been made due to business rivalry and sometimes personal and professional jealousies.
Some respected industry leaders and boxing stakeholders have made several attempts to reconcile the two warring factions in the boxing promotions business in order to enable the sports to recoup its lost ground.
Despite mediation efforts, there seems to no end in sight for the leaders of the two leading promotions companies to shake hands in reconciliation.
The prevailing situation prevents boxing fans from watching quality fights that only top fighters from both sides can deliver.
Among the fights that fans would certainly enjoy watching but may not be able to do so because their promoters are busy suing each other or they could not agree on purses and other terms, are shown in the following slides...
Trilogy: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
1 of 5Manny Pacquiao fought Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez twice, the first ended in a controversial draw in 2004 and a split decision in 2008.
In both fights, Marquez said he should have been declared winner. Marquez claimed he was cheated and blamed the judges for poor officiating.
In their first encounter in 2004, Marquez was floored three times by Pacquiao but survived the round and with a great heart, he was able to recover and managed to win majority of the rounds.
At the end of the fight, two judges scored the fight at 113-110 for Marquez and 115-110 for Pacquiao. One of the judges who scored the fight at 113-113 admitted making an error in the scoreboard because he scored the first round as 10-7 in favor of Pacquiao instead of standard 10-6 for the three-knockdown round.
Boxing insiders say, Pacquiao should have won the fight via split decision if the judge did not commit an error in the scoring.
On the other hand, the camp of Marquez claimed their fighter won the match because he was leading on points in the scoreboard after the three knockdown round.
Their second encounter happened in 2008 which ended in a split decision in favor of Manny Pacquiao.
Again, it was a closely-fought encounter with Marquez landing the most punches at a higher percentage.
In the end, Marquez lost the fight due to the knockdown he suffered in the third round.
The scores were 115–112 for Pacquiao, 115–112 for Márquez and 114–113 for Pacquiao in favor of Pacquiao.
In both fights, Marquez said he won and claimed he was a victim of bad officiating
Because of the controversies surrounding the last two fights, it would indeed be exciting for all fans to see both fighters return to the ring in November to settle their long-standing feud.
Trilogy: Sergio Martinez vs. Paul Williams
2 of 5Paul Williams has lost only once in his professional boxing career when he was knocked out by Sergio Martinez last November. His loss was against Carlos Quintana via a unanimous decision in a fight held in 2008 in California.
Williams second loss was in the hands of Sergio Martinez in their last encounter in November at the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
In the second round of their fight, Martinez caught Williams with devastating left hook which sent Williams to the canvas and never recovered.
Williams was criticized for being too careless while others say it was just a lucky punch finding its mark on the face of Williams.
Williams deserves a third match with Martinez to show his fans that it was not just a lucky punch but was a result of planned action based on his training and fight strategy.
Boxing fans would love to see a trilogy happening for these two great fighters.
Rematch: Andre Berto Vs.Victor Ortiz
3 of 5One of the recent fights that deserve a rematch was the Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz fight held at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut last April 16.
Boxing fans are saying this fight should be declared "Best Fight of the Year" because of the efforts of both fighters to dominate the fight despite the series of devastating knockdowns they have suffered during the fight which ended in a unanimous decision in favor of Ortiz.
Ring announcers were so excited they almost forgot their role in the coverage by repeatedly saying what they see as unbelievable efforts by both fighters to dominate each other for the needed victory.
Andre Berto was undefeated when he entered the ring while Victor Ortiz had two losses, one against Corey Alarcon in 2005 and the other against Marcos Maidana in 2009.
As possible winner for the "Fight of the Year" award, boxing fans will definitely enjoy another round with these two great fighters.
Rematch: Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana
4 of 5Another exciting fight worth watching is a rematch between Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana.
Khan and Maidana figured in an exciting fight that exposed each fighter's strength and weaknesses in a fight held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino last December.
Khan floored Maidana with a powerful body shot in the first round but managed to carry on until the 10th round when he caught Khan with a power shot that sent the British idol wobbling and leaning over the rope but eventually survived the round.
Khan showed great efforts in the 11th and 12th rounds which spelled out his victory via a unanimous decision.
The Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAP) declared the Khan vs. Maidana match as "Fight of the Year."
A rematch between these two great fighters will be most welcomed by avid boxing fans around the world.
Rematch: Nonito Donaire vs. Fernando Montiel
5 of 5Boxing fans would like to see more of the short-lived match between Mexican champion Fernando Montiel and the "Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire.
The "flash" fight which was held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas last February 11, took less than two rounds as Montiel hit the canvas from a devastating left hook by by Donaire.
The three-division world champion is the current WBO/WBC Bantamweight champion and No.3 in the Ring's pound-for-pound ranking.
Donaire is currently in Top Rank's "freezer" after he left Top Rank and singed up with Golden Boy Promotions thinking his contract with Top Rank has ended.
But Top Rank's owner Bob Arum said his company has still a valid contract with Donaire and should continue fighting under Top Rank.
Mediation efforts are ongoing, but no decision has been reached by the contending parties.
Donaire was scheduled to face Anselmo Moreno for his next fight, but due to legal constraints, fight negotiations failed to gain ground.
A rematch between Montiel and Doniare is being awaited by millions of boxing fans around the world.
