English Premier League Weekly Predictions: Week 37

Dan RenfroMay 12, 2011

Just when you thought they were going to slip up, Manchester United shut the door. Even though they have not officially won the Premiership title, United have all but wrapped up some silverware.

Now, what is left to watch in the Premier League? There are six teams within three points of the relegation zone, and anything can happen with such desperation.

That, along with a big Liverpool/Spurs match, could make this weekend even more exciting than the last weekend of the season.

MATCH OF THE WEEK

Liverpool 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1: Liverpool have been on an incredible run. They are scoring goals at will, and they do not allow their opponents to breath. Spurs have been up and down this season, which is why I do not expect them to win at Anfield this week. The match will be free-flowing and full of attacking, which will help the Reds continue their stellar play.

OTHER MATCHES

Blackburn 0 Manchester United 2: United only need a draw, but I don't think they will play conservatively. They got burned that way against Arsenal two weeks ago, and Sir Alex Ferguson won't allow it to happen again. Rovers are clear of the relegation zone, but they could definitely use at least a point here to make themselves a little more comfortable. A draw is possible, but not likely.

Blackpool 3 Bolton 1: The Seasiders have dipped into the relegation zone, and they want to get a win to bring themselves out. They have had very poor form (only three wins since Christmas), and their wide-open play has begun to hinder their point total. A win is essential, for they do not want to go into Old Trafford needing three points. I think they will use that as inspiration to win in front of their loyal fans.

Sunderland 1 Wolves 0: Wolves finally escaped the relegation zone, but I think they will sink back into it. They have played well for stretches this year, but I don't think they have enough grit to win this ugly match.

West Bromwich Albion 2 Everton 1: How good has Peter Odemwingie been? Have you even heard of him? The West Brom striker has scored six goals in his last seven matches, and he has cleared the Baggies of relegation worries. He has been in the right place at the right time week after week, and I think he will continue his tremendous run of form this week against Everton.

Chelsea 2 Newcastle United 0: How do you concede in 40 seconds? It's tough to say, but I would say the easiest way would be a poor giveaway before lunging at a thru-ball, leaving an in-form striker one on one with the keeper. Chelsea made a terrible mistake last week right away, and they essentially lost the title that quickly. Nevertheless, I think they are going to handle Newcastle at the Bridge.

Arsenal 2 Aston Villa 1: Look out for Darren Bent. He is a very powerful striker, and he could take advantage of Arsenal's weak defense. I think Arsenal should take care of business, but don't be surprised if Bent strikes some magic this week.

Birmingham City 0 Fulham 1: This will be an ugly match. Birmingham are very conservative (even at home), and Fulham aren't known for dominating matches. I think Fulham will get a late goal, and Birmingham fans will have to bite their nails for another week, as the drop zone is still a possibility.

Wigan Athletic 1 West Ham United 2: Both squads need a win this week. If Wigan do not win, they will fall into last place with only one match left on the schedule. If West Ham do not win, they will remain at the bottom and will (more than likely) be heading to the Championship. I think Avram Grant has enough creativity to keep West Ham afloat heading into the last weekend.

Manchester City 1 Stoke City 0: No, this isn't the F.A. Cup Final. Well, kind of. I think City will win each match against Stoke in the upcoming week with a 1-0 score. Stoke City have played exceptionally well all season, but I think City's talent will simply be too much for the Potters.

Last Week: 5-3-3 (W-L-D)

Season: 159-82-89 (W-L-D)

With only two weeks left, there is still plenty left to settle in the Premiership. If everyone keeps their fingers crossed, maybe a miracle will happen and Chelsea will catch Manchester United and steal the title. Maybe it won't happen, but wouldn't it be nice?

For some of us, it would be.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to let me know what you think about any of the predictions!
