Manny Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather Will Be More Boring Than Pacquiao/Mosley

King JMay 11, 2011

After the super mega fight of Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley came and disappointed many—including Pacquiao himself, who has been apologizing to the media and fans for what he thought was a less than 100 percent performance against a survival mode, retirement savings version of Mosley last Saturday—many are weighing in on their criticisms of the fight.

When Pacquiao/Mosley was first announced, most of the media and fans expressed their extreme disapproval via fight forums and Twitter. But just like any super fight with two icons of the sport, even if one is far way past his prime, incredible shows like HBO  24/7 and of course Showtime's Fight Camp 360 can really sway us into believing that we can not miss this fight.

At the post fight conference Dan Rafael of ESPN stated via Twitter: "The outcome of this fight is why I ripped it when it was made."

According Rafael Pacquiao/Mosley holds the record for 14th best live gate in Nevada state history, ninth in Nevada Boxing history, and with all 15,422 tickets sold with total of $8,892,600. Rafael slams UFC a bit by stating that UFC's biggest live gate in Nevada Tito Ortiz vs Chuck Liddell 2 is still $3.485 million less than what Pacquiao/Mosley did.

Reports from Bob Arum project anywhere from 1.2 million pay per view buys to 1.5 million.

So at the end of the day, number-wise, this fight was a great success. However for the fans and the media they were reminded the hard way why they were so opposed for this match up to happen.

In my previous article, Manny Pacquiao/Shane Mosley: 10 Things We Learned From Las Vegas, I talked about how Pacquiao best match ups are against traditional Mexican fighters. I explained that Pacquiao has an aggressive pressure style that best suits him when facing another fighter who is willing to slug it out and stand toe to toe and trade with him, which is again traditionally how Mexican fighters fight.

Ironically, Shane Mosley in his prime would often be more of a slugger and trade with his opponents, but the version of Shane who showed up Saturday was an overly cautious one, who tried his best to outbox and even run and hug to avoid any danger.

When Pacquiao faces a fighter who is technically skilled with good defense who is a boxer rather than a slugger, he has problems with these types of fighters. He either gets confused, frustrated or becomes overly wild, leaving himself open for counter attacks.

But for one of the most exciting fighters to have ever lived, Pacquiao's fights often become boring when he fights a highly defensive, technically skilled boxer because these types of opponents either cover up their air tight defense leaving Manny no target, or they simply run away from Manny leaving him to stop throwing as well.

So who is the greatest defensive technical fighter of our time and quite possibly of all time? Yes, indeed, my friends, that is none other than Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather's defense is as good as it gets in any form of combat sports. His signature shoulder rolls have had literally all his opponents throwing flurries of punches against the air. Mayweather also has every right to call himself the Pretty Boy because he never gets hit, therefore he never gets bruised up or cut. When Mayweather does get cleanly hit hard once in a blue moon crowds react in shock.

So back to why Pacquiao/Mayweather would be a horribly boring fight, we know Pacquiao is as exciting as can be when his opponent is also a slugger who will fight him toe to toe; this is not how Mayweather fights.

A 39-year-old Mosley, who pretty much was a slugger for his whole career, for virtually the first time ever decided to become a boxer and was barely doing just enough to keep Pacquiao off him, causing him to stop throwing punches at him in several rounds of the fight.

Pacquiao/Mosley reminded me a lot like the Pacquiao/Barrera II fight. Barrera knew he could never win slugging it out with Pacquiao, as he got viciously beat down and knocked out in their first fight, so he decided to try and outbox Pacquiao. Essentially Barrera ran from Manny all 12 rounds producing probably the most boring Barrera fight ever.

Even towards the end of the Cotto fight, once Manny hurt him, he literally ran backwards, causing Manny for the first time ever to drop his hands to his side and give a look of are we going to fight or what?

The point I'm trying to make is when opponents run from Manny, he chases them, but only to a certain point where he basically almost says, "fine if you won't fight neither will I." What Manny should be doing is cutting off the ring and using his ring generalship to dominate these type of fighters, but unfortunately he does not. He simply almost from his body language says until you are ready to fight I will to be ready, but if you are going to run then hell I got enough of the rounds won.

So this is basically why Pacquiao/Mayweather will be probably the most boring fight of Pacquiao's career, dare I say even more boring than the Clottey fight, where all he did was hide behind his gloves and close his eyes until the 12th round ended.

Mayweather is most vulnerable in the first two rounds of the fight, where he literally looks at and feels out his opponents to fully understand what he must do for the rest of the fight to win. It is during these first two rounds where Mayweather is not throwing much at all or even moving around.

So Pacquiao must go for broke and turn it up full throttle to the 10th power in these first two rounds in order for Mayweather to be knocked out or so hurt that he never regains his full composure, not being able to be the great defense technical genius that he is, shoulder rolling and running out of harm's way, for a very boring fight that will put a sold out MGM Grand or Dallas Cowboy stadium to sleep.

On the Pacquiao/Mosley fight, George Lopez Tweeted: "Obama said that the raid on Bin Laden was the longest 40 minutes of his life. I guess he didn’t watch the Pacquiao fight on Saturday."

Unfortunately if Pacquiao/Mayweather ever happens it will make Pacquiao/Mosley look like Hagler/Hearns.
