Glasgow Rangers One Win Away from Record 54th Scottish Football League Title
On an emotional night at Ibrox stadium, Walter Smith's last appearance at home as current boss ended with another victory and now only one match stands between him and a record 54th title.
A 2-0 win on the night secured another three points for Rangers and now only Kilmarnock away on Sunday stand between them and yet another league championship.
First half goals from Jelavic and Lafferty were enough to win the match against a poor Dundee United although the visitors pushed more in the second half but the closest they got to scoring was a 30-yard screamer that whacked the post but never bulged the net.
The win lifts Rangers to within touching distance of the title and should Celtic lose against Hearts on Wednesday night, the title will be theirs without kicking another ball.
The match started with banners galore around the stands, thanking the outgoing manager for his services to the club over the years; 25 years ago, Walter Smith walked through the doors in Govan as assistant manager to the Graeme Souness regime and has never looked back since.

The players had birthday boy Davie Weir celebrating his 41st birthday today and the match ended as a massive celebration with players, coaching staff and family taking the fans' applause in an obviously pre-planned circuit of the pitch to celebrate Walter Smiths time at the club.
Tomorrow sees Celtic face Hearts at Tynecastle in Edinburgh in a make or break match. Added to the spice of this match is the recent comments made by Celtic boss Lennon after Hearts' heavy defeat by Rangers at the weekend. Lennon allegedly claimed that Hearts hadn't tried in the game with the Edinburgh side's boss replying that Celtic hadn't tried in their loss against Inverness last Wednesday evening either.
Whatever happens in this match, it has made for an exciting end to the SPL season with a see saw effect happening between the old firm all season.
