Brock Lesnar vs. JDS and 10 UFC Fights Fans Can't Wait to See This Summer
On paper, the summer matchups the UFC has lined up for fans is great. From June to August, fans will be treated to some very intriguing matches, including the mega-fight between heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos.
WEC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis makes his UFC debut against wild-man Clay Guida.
Anthony Johnson introduces Nate Marquardt to the welterweight division.
Phil Davis and Rashad Evans battle it out for a shot at Jon Jones.
These are the 10 fights you don't want to miss this summer.
Notable Mention: Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry: UFC Live on Versus
1 of 11
When you get two dangerous strikers with kickboxing experience inside the Octagon together, expect to see a very technical war.
Pat Barry (6-2) makes his return to the Octagon since defeating Joey Beltran earlier this year, while Cheick Kongo (15-6-2) looks to get back on the winning track. Kongo is currently 1-2-1 in his last four fights.
Expect fireworks in this one and don't blink. Both have accurate and lethal striking that can lead to many surprises and big KOs.
No. 10: Anthony Johnson vs. Nate Marquardt: UFC Live on Versus
2 of 11
Former middleweight contender Nate "The Great" Marquardt (31-10-2) continues his quest for a title, but no longer at 185.
He will be dropping to 170 to face Anthony Johnson (9-3) in the main event of UFC on Versus, June 26th.
There are many questions that will be answered by both fighters as they work diligently to make the hardest weight cuts of their career.
Johnson has missed weight several times and Marquardt was big for 185. It will be interesting to see if they can beat the scales before they try to beat each other in what should be an exciting back-and-forth fight.
No. 9: Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: UFC 133
3 of 11
This is a clash of styles that has "Fight of the Night" written all over it.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (19-5) has to be sick of wrestlers and he finally gets an opponent in Rich Franklin (28-6-1) who should be more than willing to stand and trade.
It may not determine the next contender in the light-heavyweight division, but it will determine where each fighter is in their careers. Both are coming off losses, and Rogerio is coming off of two to Phil Davis and Ryan Bader.
No. 8: Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans: UFC 133
4 of 11
August 6th is the date and the match is set.
Phil Davis (9-0) takes on the former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (15-1-1).
It's not as good as the original matchup between Evans and current champion Jon Jones, but it can give us a good measure of how both standout wrestlers matchup with the 21-year-old.
Davis is coming off the biggest win of his young career over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, while Evans has beaten Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Thiago Silva since losing his title to Lyoto Machida.
No. 7: Carlos Condit vs. Dong Hyun Kim: UFC 132
5 of 11
So you want to know who the next welterweight contender for the UFC title is? Tune in to this fight to find out.
Former WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit (26-5) battles the Korean "Stun Gun" Dong Hyun Kim (14-0).
Of Condit's 26 victories, only one has been by decision. He is the type of fighter that isn't afraid to fight his opponents at their strength, and this is why he is producing thrilling back-and-forth fights and knockouts.
Kim is coming off a victory over Nate Diaz and is undefeated in his professional career.
If Nick Diaz doesn't get the next title shot at Georges St. Pierre, then the winner of this fight should.
No. 6: Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis: Ultimate Finale
6 of 11
This may turn out to be the best fight of the year, as it features two of the most exciting fighters in the UFC's roster.
WEC champion Anthony Pettis (13-1) meets Clay "The Carpenter" Guida (28-11) on June 4th to figure out who deserves the next shot at the Lightweight Championship.
Both have exciting styles that make for great fights, and they proved it time and time again.
If it's not spinning back kicks off the cage from Pettis or Guida's relentless pressure that makes for a good fight, then I don't know what is.
No. 5: Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben: UFC 132
7 of 11
This has "Fight of the Year" written all over it if either fighters' chin can withstand the brutal strength they both possess.
Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva (33-10-1) will test his chin when he meets Chris Leben (25-7) on July 2nd at UFC 132. This fight may very well steal the show.
Both of their chins were unable to hold up against some of their recent opponents, but that doesn't matter for Leben and Silva. They are there to give the fans what they want to see, and that's a fight.
No. 4: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Forrest Griffin 2: UFC 134
8 of 11
The first match between former champions Maurico "Shogun" Rua and Forrest Griffin was supposed to be a one-sided beatdown for the Brazilian.
It turned out to be anything but that, with Griffin submitted Rua in the third round for the win.
It was one of the biggest upsets of the year, and Griffin gets the chance to do it again in Rio at UFC 134, August 27th.
Rua (19-5) has had a recent up-and-down career, as he is 3-3 in his last six fights. Griffin (18-6) has won two fights in a row against Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin to put himself back into title contention.
This should be a war, and don't expect to see the same thing from the first fight. Shogun wants a win, and he wants it bad.
No. 3: Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami 2: UFC 134
9 of 11
It's been a long road to the title for Yushin Okami (26-5), but he finally gets one at UFC 134 against pound-for-pound king and current UFC middleweight Anderson Silva (28-4).
Although it isn't as anticipated as Silva's recent fights, it should be one of the toughest fights of his career.
Okami has a win over Silva by disqualification, and it's the last time Silva has had a red mark on his record. Okami's wrestling-oriented style is one of the hardest to deal with, and it may cause problems for the dangerous striker.
Silva wants to finish what he started, and it starts with beating up the Japanese-fighter. It won't be easy.
No. 2: Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber 2: UFC 132
10 of 11
The third anticipated rematch of the year brings former WEC Champion Urijah Faber (25-4) and current UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz (17-1) to the center of the UFC Octagon to battle for the title.
There is bad-blood between the two, and it all started at WEC 26 when "The California Kid" submitted Cruz.
Since then, Cruz has gone 8-0 against the best of the best in the bantamweight division, which eventually led him to winning the title against Brian Bowles over a year ago.
Faber has only had two fights in the 135 pound division since moving down, and he has had solid results. Wins over Takeya Mizugaki and Eddie Wineland have earned him the title shot and a chance at becoming the only fighter to win both the featherweight and bantamweight titles separately.
No. 1: Brock Lesnar vs. Junior Dos Santos: UFC 131
11 of 11
The most anticipated fight of UFC 131 and the entire summer is Brock Lesnar (5-2) vs. Junior Dos Santos (12-1).
These two heavyweights want a title shot at Cain Velasquez and both are determined to get it.
There are a lot of questions going into this bout that should be answered come June 11th. How will Lesnar react to getting hit by a devastating puncher like Dos Santos? How is Dos Santos' ground game? What has the loss to Velasquez done to Lesnar's mental approach to the sport?
These questions and more should be answered on top of one heck of a fight featuring two of the most exciting fighters in MMA.
