Strikeforce Targeting July 30 Showtime Event; PPV Card on Hold
It looks like Strikeforce's attempt to venture into pay-per-view will have to wait a while longer.
MMAJunkie.com is reporting that sources close to negotiations have stated that the company is planning a July 30 Showtime-televised event instead of the previously rumored PPV card.
Earlier this year, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker talked about using a Dan Henderson-Fedor Emelianenko matchup as the headliner to a PPV showcase. Talks for Henderson-Fedor seem to be ongoing, with Ultimate Fighting Championship executive Lorenzo Fertitta joining in on the negotiations.
"Lorenzo's working on it," MMAJunkie.com quoted UFC president Dana White saying during a press conference for UFC 129. "Me getting anywhere near that thing? You'll never see that fight."
While the event has not been confirmed, it would follow a major card set for June 18 by Strikeforce, as the promotion continues its Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament with "Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum."
Set to meet on the night are semifinal round bouts between Alistair Overeem (34-11) and Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1), and Josh Barnett (29-5) and Brett Rogers (11-2). Gina Carano (7-1) is also expected to return to the cage for the first time since suffering her first career loss to Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos in 2010.
