GSP vs. Shields Video: Was Shields' Eye Poke on St-Pierre Intentional?
Was Georges St-Pierre's disappointing performance in the UFC 129 main event caused by an intentional eye-poke from Jake Shields?
New slow-motion video evidence shows that the thumb that caught St-Pierre's eye early in the fight may have actually been on purpose on the part of Shields.
While Shields and his camp are certainly going to discount any suggestion that he would try to do something like this on purpose, there is definitely some question as to what he was intending to do by throwing a lunging palm to the face.
St-Pierre's coach, Greg Jackson, talked to Sherdog.com shortly after the event, making sure to note that the eye injury hindered his fighter's abilities in the fight.
"Georges’ eye was pretty badly injured—he told me that in between rounds—and Georges is a very timing-based fighter, and so when one of your eyes is injured your depth-perception gets off pretty significantly and it’s very hard for you to time the shots because it’s hard to see where they are coming," he described.
Nevertheless, the controversy surrounding Georges St-Pierre's performance at UFC 129 continues even days after he successfully defended the UFC Welterweight Championship against Jake Shields. St-Pierre fought to his fourth straight victory by decision after five rounds.
Many fans and even some experts have criticized GSP for his lack of aggression in this and recent fights. But, for once, the disappointing effort may actually be excused at UFC 129.
