UFC 129 Results: 5 Crazy Things from the Event
UFC 129 was the largest UFC event in history. It was the largest MMA event in North American history.
It was a landmark event with two title fights and stacked with a ton of other great match-ups.
With an event so epically epic, there were undoubtedly going to be some crazy things happen.
What makes something memorable? What makes an event compelling?
These are my top 5 crazy things from UFC 129—and there were some good ones.
Honorable Mention: Three Losses for Team Cesar Gracie
1 of 6
Cesar Gracie's MMA team is one of the best in the world and was riding more momentum than ever, with Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez defending their championships at the last Strikeforce event.
With all three of their fighters at UFC 129 suffering decision losses, Gracie's fighters have another uphill road ahead of them.
5. John Makdessi's Brutal Back Fist
2 of 6
UFC 129 saw a slew of highlight reel finishes.
Big time KOs from Jake Ellenberger and Vladimir Matyushenko. A beautiful TKO from Ivan Menjivar. Outstanding submissions from Jason MacDonald and Pablo Garza.
Out of all of those brilliant finishes, John Makdessi's spinning back fist KO over Kyle Watson takes the cake.
It landed perfectly and knocked Watson completely unconscious with just the single blow.
Were it not for Lyoto Machida, John Makdessi's KO would be the talk of the MMA community right now.
4. $129,000 Bonuses
3 of 6
Bonuses for "fight of the night", "knock out of the night" and "submission of the night" are normally determined by the size and success of the event.
Considering how epic UFC 129 was, we could have expected huge bonuses.
But to just round up to $129,000 for the namesake of the event? Holy crap!
Receiving that kind of bonus is pretty crazy (good).
3. Jake Shields Wins Two Rounds from Two Judges?
4 of 6
If you think Georges St. Pierre did not perform up to his potential, fine.
If you want to credit Shields for being surprisingly competitive, fine.
But what on earth were the judges seeing when they awarded two rounds to Jake Shields?
There might have been some close rounds, but St. Pierre was in control the whole time.
Honorable mention: Scorecards for Aldo vs Hominick were a little confusing as well.
2. Steven Seagal Is a Martial Arts Genius
5 of 6
There are a lot of pundits out there who like to dump a bunch of haterade on Steven Seagal, but those people are just flat out jealous.
With the help of Mr. Seagal, Lyoto Machida landed a spectacular front crane kick to put away Randy Couture.
The knockout joins Anderson Silva's front kick KO over Vitor Belfort as the front-runners for knockout of the year.
And guess who helped Anderson Silva with his kick....
(yea, Seagal)
1. Mark Hominick's Head!
6 of 6
Machida's KO was probably the most crazy moment of the event, but Mark Hominick battling Jose Aldo for the final rounds of their fight with what looked like a tennis ball under his forehead takes the cake.
I have seen some bad swelling and hematomas in MMA, but for some reason, I was actually grossed out by this one.
It swelled up fast and looked like it would not stop.
What was that thing?
