Both Sides: Why the New York Giants Should['nt] Trade for Tony Gonzalez

Travis RandOct 13, 2008

All of us as fans have opinions on the going-ons in the league, but very few of us have an open mind to what the other side may believe. Well, it's about time we all started trying to see things from a different perspective

Situation: Tomorrow night is the NFL trade deadline and a ton of names have been thrown out there. Roy Williams and Tony Gonzalez are the most popular by far.

It has been rumored that the New York Giants have shown a lot of interest in what many people call "The Greatest Tight End of All-Time," Tony Gonzalez. The Chiefs are currently after a third-round draft pick but the real question is, should the Giants go through with it and acquire the final puzzle piece?

Why the Giants SHOULD trade for Tony Gonzalez:

Let me make this as clear as possible for everyone. Eli Manning, Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Brandon Jacobs, Rich Seubert, and Shaun O' Hara. That's a finely tuned offense in many experts' opinions. What was missing though? The tight end. The Giants may have made a mistake in trading away Pro-Bowler Jeremy Shockey last season. The team may have thought it had a little bit more of a weapon in sophomore Kevin Boss.

Boss has caught just five balls for 60 yards this season. Gonzalez though is coming off what many say could be his best season with 90-plus catches, over 1000 yards, and that was with Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard tossing him the pigskin.

The real reason the G-Men need to make it happen though is draft picks. New York got a second-round and a fifth-round draft pick for Jeremy Shockey. Let's look at it this way instead, combining the Shockey trade with this one

Giants Receive: Second-round pick, fifth-round pick, Tony Gonzalez

Giants Lose: Third-round pick, Jeremy Shockey

Hmm... Enough said really. The best TE ever and two draft picks. Wouldn't wanna repeat would we?

Why the Giants SHOULD NOT trade for Tony Gonzalez:

There is an old saying...If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Big Blue is currently 4-0 and on a tear. Does New York really need to give up a valuable draft pick for TG? I don't think so. Sure, Kevin Boss isn't as effective as the Giants had hoped, but with Burress and Toomer playing the way they have, do we really need an elite tight end?

There's no way Kevin Boss stays down all year like this, and people are forgetting one of the main jobs a tight end has—blocking. Many said that Boss had better hands than Shockey, but wouldn't be able to fill in as a blocker. Every one of the Giants running backs have over 20 carries and all are averaging over five yards per carry. Enough said.

The main reason the Giants shouldn't do it? Draft picks. Since Jerry Reese was named general manager, everyone he drafts turns into a gold nugget in an already elite offense and stout defense. Look at last year's draft picks and you'll know exactly what I mean.

Steve Smith, starting slot receiver. Aaron Ross, starting cornerback. Ahmad Bradshaw, leading rusher in postseason. Kevin Boss, huge 40-yard reception in Superbowl XLII. With names like that, how can you even consider giving up a pick?

Final Verdict

The G-Men need to pull the trigger on this one. It's a very good move, and New York would be even more of an offensive threat with someone like Gonzalez on the line. BUT, if the Giants don't go after him, it won't hurt in the least. Boss will come through and that No. 3 draft pick, with the way Reese has been picking 'em, will be a Pro-Bowler by his fifth year.
