WWE Tag Team Division: Work with What You've Got

Tyson JonesJun 7, 2018

So, It's no secret WWE basically has no tag team division at this point. You can literally count the number of teams on your finger. It's sad too, considering the many stars who could benefit from a real competitive tag team division.

So, I decided to go ahead and do a piece on all the teams WWE could work with as well as establish a place for the team.

Any additions and comments are welcome, so without further delay, here's what WWE's Tag Team Division could be.

Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay

1 of 11

Alberto Del Rio is a future World Champion. Nobody can say that WWE hasn't put that in your heads on multiple occasions and he's shown over his short career in WWE that he can really tussle with the big names.

That said, what better way to have prestigious tag titles than to have world championship contenders challenging for the belts at times.

Add his partner Brodus Clay, and you've got a unique mix of styles here. Alberto Del Rio's mix of high-impact moves combined with his Cross Armbreaker and Clay's power and throwing ability make for an impressive combination.

These two, while not regular tag team competitors can easily always be put together, especially when Del Rio finds he has more on his plate than he can deal with (and with his mouth, that may happen more often than not).

Enter Brodus Clay. I see potential in this man and hope that aside from tag competition, he finds himself a niche in the mid-card division. These two are talented and will be fine on their own, but sometimes, it works when you take two good things and put them together.

Alex Riley and The Miz

I really just found this video funny.
I really just found this video funny.

These two have a similar relationship as Brodus and Del Rio do, so I believe this team COULD have done the same thing. However, Alex Riley was recently drafted to Smackdown, so I don't think that will happen.

Instead, A-Ri will probably venture off on his own, though always be an ally of The Miz for when he finds himself in need of assistance. Like Clay and Del Rio, both of these men can do well alone but why limit them?

The WWE Tag Titles are a dual-branded title, so both champions being on separate shows shouldn't be an issue.

Take into account both aren't bad on the mic, and you've not only got a sound team in the ring, but also an entertaining one.

Big Show and Kane

3 of 11

The current WWE Tag Team Champions. Now, I had a hard time considering adding them to the list, but then it occurred to me. Kane and Big Show have won the tag titles before and are both former World Champions.

What better team to use to put over another than these two monsters? Big Show and Kane are two guys who are at the tail end of their careers and the best thing they can do is help put over young talent when they're teamed up.

Not saying they should be stepping stones for everybody, but if you have a team that you want to put over as a legit threat to the titles, have them beat these guys.

That said, I don't believe these two will be a permanent team, but a special attraction. If one has a big problem, drag the other into it like they did with The Corre.

Right now I believe WWE is coasting along as far as the Tag Titles go, so they gave them to two guys they know can deliver, but I think in the future, a very impressive team will take the belts off these guys.

The Usos

WWE's last tag team. The Usos are an impressive team, with the only thing holding them back, in my opinion, is WWE's lack of care for the Tag Team division. That said, I hope the move to Friday Nights sees new things for Jimmy and Jey.

The Uso brothers have a lot of what WWE likes. They look like legit tough guys, they have the pedigree, they've got the skills in the ring and on the mic. In a perfect tag team division, I believe these guys have what it takes to be champions.

Maybe a new finisher, but nothing wrong with the splash off the top rope.

Daniel Bryan and Michael Tarver

RUN WITH THIS WWE!
RUN WITH THIS WWE!

This one is a bit random, but hear me out. Daniel Bryan is considered one of the best in the world at professional wrestling. Unfortunately, WWE doesn't really care about that. Michael Tarver has been MIA for a very long time now, though he is listed as a member of the RAW roster.

The reason I could see these two as a tag team is because of a shared past and a shared enemy (to an extent) in WWE Management.

On this slide, a promo featuring these two is shown and exhibits something some people are unaware of. Both of these men can work the mic.

Also, in this video, both men are shown to be resentful for being eliminated from NXT by WWE Management. Why not play on this?

Have them fight as a couple of anti-establishment characters who take what they want and back up their words with action.

Add in the fact they're two very different styles (Daniel is a submission and grappling specialist and Tarver is a brawler), and you've got a great heel team here who I believe could be great WWE Tag Team Champions.

Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater/The Corre

6 of 11
Ironically, they could still call themselve The Corre as Slater and Gabriel are the most consistant or Core performers of the group.
Ironically, they could still call themselve The Corre as Slater and Gabriel are the most consistant or Core performers of the group.

Resident tag team of both The Corre and The Nexus, Heath and Justin are 3-Time Tag Team Champions already as members of the groups.

That said, the duo has always been serious as for the sake of being in two environments that call for it. This team would be far more interesting on their own as faces. Let Heath be the fun-loving guy from NXT and let Justin be the down-to-earth guy he once was.

As of late, these two have pretty much carried WWE's Tag Team division so I believe these guys can always deliver as tag champions or challengers to the belts, with being in a stable the only thing holding them back.

Add to that, I think both Slater and Gabriel are getting better on the mic and Gabriel has always been a great competitor. I love the thought of these two remaining a team for some time to come.

R-Truth and Mark Henry

7 of 11

Two men who recently turned heel (for the better, I might add) and would be interesting to see as a tag team.

Mark Henry hasn't been heel since he left ECW, but being the strongest man on the planet and with past knowledge, it's no secret this man can do some damage.

On the other side is R-Truth. R-Truth hasn't been heel since he returned to WWE, though past knowledge of his time as K-Krush in TNA shows he's no stranger at getting heat.

Mark Henry was recently drafted to Smackdown, but again, with dual-branded tag titles, that shouldn't matter much.

Henry has never been one to speak much, but his mic skills are decent and I think the world saw Monday that Truth can work the mic as a heel with the best of them.

Take into account the styles of these two men, the power of Henry and the "Kwikness" of Truth (though if Truth will eliminate some of his more high-flying moves from his move set following his move set has yet to be seen) and you've got an interesting combination.

Add to that, they're both former champions of varying degrees so they also have the added benefit of being able to put teams over, which, at their age, is a good thing.

CM Punk and Mason Ryan/The New Nexus

I just enjoy this song.
I just enjoy this song.

The New Nexus is in bad condition right now. The new management of CM Punk hasn't resulted in anything other than punts to the head of everyone but Punk.

The Nexus, under Barrett's leadership, went on to win the tag titles twice, while New Nexus has done nothing. I believe Punk and Mason have the ability to change that.

Punk at one time challenged DX for the titles as one third of the Straight-Edge Society in a match that would see the team that would become Show-Miz win the belts.

Punk seems to see Ryan as his right-hand man and I believe being tag champions would not only solidify the pecking order of The New Nexus, but give the group credibility.

The two would function similar to the Del Rio/Clay system in that it wouldn't be a permanent team by far, though I suspect Ryan will stay with Punk for a long time.

Ryan is still pretty green and has a lot of improvement before he can function well on his own and sticking with Punk, I believe, is a good way to help with this.

William Regal and Yoshi Tatsu

9 of 11

William Regal and Yoshi Tatsu may seem a bit random, but I believe this could work as a face or heel team, though face would probably be the better way to go. I see two scenarios here.

As a face team, you've got William acknowledging Yoshi's ability and wanting to help him realize his potential (and maybe helping with his English as well).

This would help because it keeps a brilliant performer like Regal relevant during his final run with the company and it allows him to get the adulation he deserves, being he's played a heel for most of his career.

Yoshi benefits in getting experience from a seasoned veteran like Regal and can be featured more prominently, should the team take off, which may lead to not only a tag title, but a singles title for the young man.

As a heel team, we follow Regal again acknowledging Yoshi's skill, but instead of just helping him focus it, he's teaching him how to be more ruthless with it.

Again, we have Yoshi probably learning more English and speaking on the mic more, but in a more aggressive fashion, interjecting his promos with Japanese from time to time.

Yoshi benefits in that he can be seen more seriously. At the moment, he's a lot like Kofi Kingston and could do with a bit of reinventing. With Regal by his side, it'd be the perfect catalyst for his transformation.

With Regal on his way out, Yoshi could even add The Regal Stretch to his arsenal. That Roundhouse Kick finisher isn't all that impressive.

Regal could benefit from this in that if this character is successful, he'll have left another lasting mark in the WWE that everyone knows about (not everyone knows he trained Punk and Bryan), and that he'll be playing a character he's comfortable with in the ruthless brawler from Blackpool.

I think these two would make a great tag team and great tag team champions, given the chance.

Zack Ryder and The Big O

Personally, I'm not a fan of Ryder going back to the tag team division, but this could work with the Del Rio/Brodus system, because I do believe Zack has garnered enough attention for a push in the near future.

Zack Ryder is entertaining. Perhaps the funniest guy in WWE, and with the addition of Big O, who himself is pretty funny when appearing on Zack's show, I believe they could do wonders for WWE programming.

Now, I haven't seen Big O wrestle before. I know little to nothing about this man, but if he is indeed coming to WWE, I see the role of Zack's bodyguard as his and if he can wrestle as well as he can speak (because WWE really needs you to be able to wrestle), he's golden and can really help the current WWE Internet Champion.

Zack has shown on his show he can be funny, and with the fans begging for a dose of Vitamin Z, this member of The Zack Pack is all for putting him with The Big O. Woo Woo Woo, You Know It.

Thus ends this little show. Though it occurred to me, you don't see many tag team finishers in WWE anymore along with tag teams, so here's a list of each new team's finishing move (If you can come up with some other ideas, feel free to tell me). Couldn't come up with one for all of them, unfortunately.

Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay: Tonga Death Grip by Clay followed by an Enzugiri by Del Rio.

Riley and The Miz: Assisted Skull-Crushing Finale (Riley holds the opponents legs on his shoulders while Miz applies a Full-Nelson before falling forward while Riley drops to a seated position.)

Daniel Bryan and Michael Tarver: Kill Shot (Knockout Punch by Tarver) followed by the LeBell Lock by Bryan.

Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater: Sweetness (Snap Inverted DDT) followed by the 450 Splash.

CM Punk and Mason Ryan: GTS followed by Mason's Swinging Side Slam.
