Calling All Arm-Chair GMs: Who Should the Redskins Take at No. 10?

Andrew SheaApr 28, 2011

With just hours left until the Washington Redskins are on the clock in the 2011 NFL Draft, the time has come to put the average Skins fan in the GM's seat in the war room.

You are on the clock.

There are many different directions that the team could go, but only one choice can be made. Which 2011 draft selection would best help the Redskins succeed in both the near and the distant future? The team could go the route of quarterback, wide receiver, outside linebacker, defensive end, cornerback, or even running back.

The ideal situation would be to find a dance partner, trading down from No. 10 overall and picking up an extra second- or third-round selection, but for this, let's just say that the Redskins are "stuck" at 10th overall. They can neither trade back nor move forward. It's 10th or nothing (ask the 2003 Minnesota Vikings how that feels).

Here's how the draft has shaken out over the past nine picks:

  1. Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers)
  2. Marcell Dareus (Denver Broncos)
  3. Von Miller (Buffalo Bills)
  4. A.J. Green (Cincinnati Bengals)
  5. Blaine Gabbert (Arizona Cardinals)
  6. Patrick Peterson (Cleveland Browns)
  7. Prince Amukamara (San Fransisco 49ers)
  8. Nick Fairley (Tennessee Titans)
  9. Tyron Smith (Dallas Cowboys)
  10. ?

Donovan McNabb is not expected to return with Minnesota showing some interest in your former starting QB. Rex Grossman is a free agent, but he knows your coordinator's offense and has shown dedication by showing up to your team's practice two weeks ago. These could hinder you from taking a player like Jake Locker or Ryan Mallet this high in the draft.

Brian Orakpo has even said himself he would like help on the opposite side to provide more pressure. Robert Quinn could be a fit if he can adjust to the 3-4 scheme while J.J. Watt seems like a safe pick and a natural fit for a 3-4 DE.

With the uncertainty of a Santana Moss return, Julio Jones seems like the most explosive player left on the board, and he fills a need on the roster. There are also other options you could go but these players seem like they could all fill needs. Here are some of the best options:

  • Julio Jones (WR Alabama)
  • Robert Quinn (DE/OLB North Carolina)
  • J.J. Watt (DE Wisconsin)
  • Jake Locker (QB Washington)
  • Ryan Mallet (QB Arkansas)
  • Cameron Jordan (DE California)
  • Mike Pouncey (C/G Florida)
  • Mark Ingram (RB Alabama)
  • Anthony Castonzo (OT Boston College)
  • Aldon Smith (DE/OLB Missouri)
  • Ryan Kerrigan (DE/OLB Purdue)
  • Jimmy Smith (CB Colorado)

You're on the clock.
