David Booth Hot, Jarome Iginla Not

R LOct 12, 2008

No more ifs, ands, or buts. Every team was in action this week, meaning that the season is up and running. It's a late Sunday evening, and the final match of the day between Los Angeles and San Jose just finished.

Among the top stories of the week was Toronto's short undefeated reign this season, which came to a close after a 6-1 beating from the Montreal Canadiens. Also, the Tampa Bay Lightning managed to find another sure path to defeat, blowing a three-goal lead against the Carolina Hurricanes.

With that in mind, I bring you this week's hot-or-not selections:

HOT

Known primarily as a setup man, Marc Savard showed some nice scoring touch in Boston's two games. After potting a goal and an assist in Colorado, Savard followed it up with a deuce in Minnesota.

The Vancouver Canucks totalled 11 goals in two games this week. You know that Daniel and Henrik Sedin were responsible for most of the damage. Together, they put up nine points to ensure that the Canucks won both matches in the home-and-home against Calgary.

Got to love it when the older guys produce. Doug Weight picked up a goal and two assists for Long Island this week. Playing for a team that doesn't have too much offensive capabilities, Weight will be needed to produce regularly.

Cough up two wins for Martin Brodeur and Zach Parise. New Jersey's two greatest weapons made it happen yet again. Marty was his usual self, allowing one goal in each of the two matchups, and getting closer to the records he's sure to break this year.

Meanwhile, Parise scored a goal in both games, and his overtime winner in Pittsburgh was a thing of beauty. Nothing but the sound of puck hitting iron before going in, and the arena silenced.

Finally, the good side of Nikolai Zherdev came out for the New York Rangers. Back-to-back two-point efforts will get the critics off the Ukrainian's back for a couple of days.

They call him the wizard. Ray Whitney was instrumental in Carolina's quick start to the season. He lit the lamp against Florida, and notched two assists in Tampa Bay.

If the early season is any indication, David Booth will easily crush his career-high 22 goals from last year. The Detroit native made Cam Ward look silly on Friday with the goal he scored. He also added an assist before striking twice against Atlanta on Saturday.

Vyacheslav Kozlov is extremely capable of bouncing back from a tough year. I said it from the start, and Slava is proving me right so far. He looked like the regular Kozlov, tallying a goal with an assist against Washington, and another marker in Florida.

Fantasy owners had to be pleased with the great Russian's performance for Washington. It was Alexander Semin showing off his skill instead of Ovechkin. The great eight did fire two rockets in against Chicago, but Semin put up four points over the weekend. Two were on the power play, and one was shorthanded.

Brad Boyes, Paul Kariya, and Andy McDonald are turning out to be one heck of a trio. Kariya and McDonald each racked up four assists. Brad Boyes, on the other hand, had two goals and an assist.

A lot of combinations this week in the hot section. Jason Arnott and J.P Dumont appear to be fine without Alexander Radulov. Each put up four points—two goals and two assists for Arnott, and four assists for Dumont.

From Miami to the desert. Seems depressing, but Olli Jokinen is only interested in what happens on the ice. The Finn notched a goal and two assists for the Phoenix Coyotes. Wayne Gretzky finally has another veteran to help Shane Doan.

NOT

As much as I hate to do it, Jarome Iginla is in the not section after two games. Watching him fight Willie Mitchell and knock him down to the ice just shows that he can do more than score goals. Unfortunately, it's the goals from Iginla that mean most to Calgary. For now, Andre Roy is one of the Flames' leading scorers.

In an earlier article, I asked if 29th place was mearly a pipe dream for the Los Angeles Kings. It will be if Anze Kopitar is held off the scoresheet. The season may be young, but L.A. needs all of the points they can get.

Maybe it's a summer hangover, but Marty Turco allowed eight goals combined in Dallas' home and road openers. He'll get a chance to redeem himself on Wednesday when the Stars host Nashville.

Sergei has the edge on his brother, Andrei Kostitsyn, for now. Andrei was held pointless in Buffalo and Toronto. Sergei did all of his damage against the Maple Leafs with two goals and an assist.

The Chicago Blackhawks showed some bright spots in their two defeats. This team has amazing young talent—and once the chemistry is right, I'm sure we'll see better outcomes.

Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, and Scott Niedermayer all failed to produce. Instead, George Parros, Rob Niedermayer, and Ryan Carter scored for the Anaheim Ducks. When the first three get it going, so will the entire squad.

Two losses for the Colorado Avalanche despite outplaying their opponents on both occasions. Andrew Raycroft may be getting his first start of the season sooner than expected because Peter Budaj looks pretty shaky.

Tomas Kaberle is the most talented player on the Toronto Maple Leafs roster. That goes without saying. The Leafs got one win without his production, but the second wasn't even a contest. With St. Louis on the agenda tomorrow, Kaberle has little time to get his game going.

We're all finished for the second edition of Hot or Not. More action this upcoming week, and more coverage for me to follow. I look forward to it, and I hope all of you enjoyed once again.
