UFC 131 Fight Card: If Chris Weidman Wins, Should He Get Court McGee Next?
I've been thinking about this for weeks, but until now I hadn't had the time to get it out in the open.
Considering how quickly we'll be closing in on UFC 131 after this Saturday's UFC 129 event, I figured now would be a good time to talk about one Chris Weidman.
Remember Weidman—the guy who was brought into the UFC as a replacement for Maiquel Falcao and was supposed to get smashed by Alessio Sakara?
He wound up dominating Sakara for the majority of the bout and was instantly put on the map as a guy to keep both eyes on in the UFC's otherwise-cleared-out middleweight division.
He gets relative newcomer Jesse Bongfeldt at UFC 131 in what should be an entertaining fight—one that was supposed to be Court McGee's fight before an injury took McGee out of the picture temporarily.
This has led me to draw out a scenario that may or may not work at this point in Weidman's UFC run, but nonetheless, I find that while it might stylistically be a nightmare for Weidman. It could also wind up being an action-packed encounter that might be a candidate for Fight of The Year.
Who is the foe for Weidman that I'm proposing, you may ask?
Simply put, it's the man that Weidman replaced against Bongfeldt, Court McGee.
All that will need to happen is for Weidman to beat Bongfeldt, but if he does do just that, we could see a clash of two young but improving UFC prospects who might be 2-0 or better by the time they finally collide.
It would make sense if a win over Bongfeldt led to this fight being made next, though, considering how young both guys are in the sport, and the only reason that it seems that Weidman was thrown to the wolves was because Weidman is a gamer who wanted to take on an elite striker when a striking machine was injured and couldn't fight.
Also consider that a win over "Water Bongfeldt" will put two guys with 2-0 UFC records, so one young star will be forced to start from scratch while the other moves closer and closer towards finally getting to prove their worth as a top 15-top 10 UFC middleweight.
Couple in their overall Wrestling and stand-up games, and the fight sounds quite tantalizing to the UFC fan's taste buds.
Could it happen for real?
Of course, but first Weidman's going to have to clear out the "Water Bong" on June 11.
If not, it could be a while before the fight happens...and while it's not Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre, it still has "exciting fight" written all over it.
