Rick Adelman: Is This the Man with the Plan Who Could Help the Toronto Raptors?
Most recently, Rick Adelman, former head coach of the Houston Rockets, was told that he would not be given another contract and his run with the team is over.
This is probably because of the fact that the Rockets have not made the playoffs for the past two seasons.
There are many reasons for the downfall of the Rockets from their reign in the playoffs. It could be the fact that their GM did not make some smart decisions in some aspects of the game.
Obviously, adding players like Luis Scola and Kevin Martin were some very big acquisitions. Or it could also be the fact that Yao Ming has not been 100 percent and their frontcourt has not been very strong.
Whatever the reason be, Rick Adelman had nothing to do with it. He is a great coach, and bringing him to Toronto would be a huge plus for the team and would shorten the rebuilding process by a lot.
This is not suggesting that we get rid of Jay Triano, because Triano is in a very tough situation right now and he is trying his best. If the team does have to get rid of Triano, then let them, but I would personally put him into the assistant coach position, which is where he belongs.
Adelman is a defensive-minded coach, and the Toronto Raptors are one of the worst defensive teams in the league. The team does have some potential All-NBA defensive team members in Ed Davis and James Johnson.
On the other hand, you have players like Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon who don't play a lot of defense. Bargnani, specifically, has been quoted as saying he focuses mainly on offense and not too much on rebounding and defense. That is not entirely horrible per se, since he is actually capable of doing some amazing things offensively, but defense is something should every player should work on.
Adelman is someone who can make the Raptors' main focus on DEFENSE. As of right now, the team plays offense only, and they don't do a very good job at it.
On defense, the team lets in too many easy shots and doesn't contest the shooter or the player with the ball. Their off the ball defense is also not very effective as they don't get past screens and the players they defend get the ball too easily.
Let us hope that Bryan Colangelo can bring in Adelman and fix the situation we have in Toronto
